The award is bestowed annually to recognize and honor those who have had a significant impact on the success of the Community Arts Center, a wholly owned subsidiary of Pennsylvania College of Technology.

In bestowing the award, the Arts Center's board acknowledged the newspaper's integral role in bringing Williamsport to the forefront as a bona fide arts community. The Sun-Gazette's commitment to covering and showcasing the region's wide-ranging artistic and cultural activities has helped to define the community as artistically and culturally rich.

"In recent years, the Sun-Gazette has assumed a pivotal position in helping this area recognize and capitalize upon its artistic, entertainment and cultural resources," said William J. Martin, chair of the Arts Center's Board of Directors and senior vice president at Penn College. "By virtue of its ongoing promotion of the arts, the Sun-Gazette is a most worthy recipient of the Director's Chair Award."

An awards ceremony recognizing the Sun-Gazette's contribution to the arts was held March 28 at the Arts Center. Bernard A. Oravec, publisher of the Sun-Gazette, accepted the award on behalf of the newspaper.
