Wildcat Fall Sports Teams Have Great Week

While the Pennsylvania College of Technology golf team completed its season, the cross-country, tennis and women's volleyball teams, which are scheduled for Penn State University Athletic Conference playoff action this week, won all of their matches over the past week, as did the men's and women's soccer teams.

Flashback GolfThe Wildcats finished third in the Penn State University Athletic Conference championships with a 671 total, behind champ Penn State Hazleton (655) and runner-up Penn State Mont Alto (659), and they placed seventh in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national tournament during play Monday and Tuesday on the 7,228-yard, par 72 Penn State Blue Course.

Lindenwood-Belleview won the USCAA title with a 597 total. Wildcat Alex Howe, of Lake Ariel, shot a 163, good for sixth in the PSUAC and tied for 25th overall. Also for Penn College, Dan Kramer, of Avon, Conn., and Corey Teeple, of Lake Ariel, both shot 168; Kurt Linhart, of Zionsville, shot 174; Joe Peters, of Harrisburg, shot 177; and Nick Krupka, of Allentown, shot 186.

Cross-CountrySaturday, in their final tune-up before this week's PSUAC championship, the Wildcats finished first in a seven-team field. Travis Cain, of Bloomsburg, led the team with a second-place individual finish over the 5.8-mile course in 35 minutes, 37 seconds. Dan Starr, of Stewartstown, placed eighth in one of his best performances of the season.

Men's SoccerChris Brennan, of New Hope, scored the game-winner in overtime as Penn College edged NCAA Division III Alfred, N.Y., University, 5-4, on Tuesday. Brennan notched a hat trick.

On Sunday, the Wildcats blanked Penn State Beaver, 5-0, to improve to 5-0-1 in the PSUAC and 8-4-2 overall. Ben Shade, of Fleetwood, scored two goals and William DeAngelo, of Dallas, had a goal and an assist. Penn College outshot Beaver, 17-5. In the Week 5 USCAA Coaches Poll, the Wildcats remain No. 17.

Women's SoccerValeria Passalacqua, of McAlisterville, scored the game-winner in double overtime Monday as Penn College edged NCAA Division III Elmira, N.Y., Jayvees, 4-3 in double overtime, for its first win of the season after five losses and two ties. Kierstin Steer, of South Williamsport, added two goals and an assist.

On Saturday, Shelby Straub, of South Williamsport, scored two goals to help the Wildcats in a 4-2 win at Lincoln University. Earlier in the season, the two teams played to a 1-1 tie. Also scoring goals for Penn College were Steer and Passalacqua. Goalie Stephanie Koleno, of Moshannon, had four saves.

On Sunday, the Wildcats posted their third win of the week, 6-0, overPenn StateBeaver to go to 3-5-2 overall. Elizabeth Gries, of Pottsville, had a hat trick and Steer had four assists. Penn College outshot Beaver 38-1.

Team TennisOn Saturday, Penn College beat Penn State York, 8-1, to improve to 5-2 overall and in the PSUAC. Adam Smith, of Duncannon; Caleb Wise, of Manheim, and Chris Morrison, of Hershey, won both their singles and doubles matches.

Women's Volleyball Kelly Hebert, of Wellsboro, had a season- and career-high seven blocks in a 25-4, 25-16, 25-11 victory on Saturday over Penn State York. Tara Powell, of Burgettstown, had seven digs and six kills while Lyndsey Smith, of Mechanicsburg, had 17 assists and Paula Karine Monteiro, of Rio de Janeiro, led the team with four aces.

On Sunday, Penn College topped Penn State Scranton, 25-8, 25-13, 25-19, and Penn State Wilkes-Barre, 19-25, 25-13, 13-25, 25-11, 15-10, to close out its regular season at 15-1 in the PSUAC and 19-8 overall. In the Week 5 USCAA Coaches Poll, Penn College jumped to No. 7 from No. 13. On Tuesday, the Wildcats will host the No. 7 seed in a PSUAC quarterfinal at 7 p.m. at Bardo Gym.
