Gemma Power SystemsWelding students at Pennsylvania College of Technology are benefiting from a recent donation made by Gemma Power Systems, a leading engineering, procurement and construction company.

A subsidiary of Argan Inc., GPS donated surplus welding materials including various welding electrodes for carbon and alloy steels that are utilized in the shielded metal arc, gas tungsten arc and flux cored arc welding processes.

“We are extremely appreciative of the donation of welding consumables,” said David R. Cotner, dean of the School of Industrial, Computing & Engineering Technologies. “This donation will be used toward the instruction of the next generation of welding craftspeople, preparing them to go into the workforce and make their contribution to our communities with companies like Gemma Power Systems.”

GPS is the engineering-procurement-construction contractor for the Panda Patriot Generating Station being constructed in Lycoming County. The natural gas-fired, combined-cycle facility will provide electric power to nearly a million homes.

“We’re pleased to make this contribution to Penn College for use in its industrial and engineering technologies programs,” said Joe Hickson, Patriot project manager. “The college is truly a pipeline of talent for our industry, and we are delighted to support their mission.”

Penn College offers a certificate in welding, an associate degree in welding technology, and a bachelor’s degree in welding and fabrication engineering technology.
