The Gallery at Penn College

Fine art by Abigail DeBloois, a student at Williamsport Area High School, is on display in the lobby of The Gallery at Penn College through June 30.

DeBloois received an Artistic Excellence Award from The Gallery at Penn College. The honor recognizes outstanding artistic talent and achievement in the visual arts and is given to a student who demonstrates skill in his or her selected medium and knowledge of the artistic process. The award includes a gift certificate to The College Store and an opportunity to exhibit artwork in the gallery lobby.

DeBloois’ featured artworks are portraits created in a variety of media. The student exhibit coincides with an exhibition of acrylic glass art by Margaret Smithers-Crump, a Houston artist.

Abigail DeBlooisDeBloois will be a senior at WAHS in the fall. During her junior year, she was enrolled in Level 2 2-D Art and Independent Art Study, and she was named to the National Art Honor Society.

The young artist likes to explore media including graphite, colored pencil, ballpoint pens, watercolors and 3-D pens.

“I enjoy the challenge of creating value and dimension with ballpoint pens,” DeBloois said. “I’m always looking for new and challenging mediums to work with to find new ways of portraying the human face, which, in itself, is a work of art. As far as painting goes, it’s not so much the final piece, but the creation process that I love. Watching the colors from watercolor paints swirl together on canvases and paper to make interesting and pleasing compositions is so satisfying for me.”

Located on the third floor of Madigan Library, the gallery’s summer hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Fridays, and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays (closed Mondays and Saturdays).

In addition to serving as an educational resource for Penn College students and a cultural asset to the college and community, the gallery is dedicated to promoting art appreciation through exhibitions of contemporary art.
