Tia G. La, a pre-physician assistant major from Guam, has been chosen as the December/January “Student of the Month” at Pennsylvania College of Technology.

A former student photographer for Public Relations & Marketing and a Community Peer Educator with Student Affairs, she also volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters and has given of her time at Susquehanna Health (now UPMC Susquehanna).

"Her images are fantastic! Her incredible photographic talent has graced our college magazine, marketing publications, social media, PCToday and other media/marketing outlets," a staff nominator wrote. "For two full years (summers included), she represented PRM at countless campus and off-campus events, positively interacting with the college family and the community."

Tia G. LaWith commendable devotion to her academics and her future career, La scaled back her busy schedule in order to focus more fully on a demanding Health Sciences major.

But she has been unsparing in her efforts to make a new home in the Williamsport community, not once returning to Guam since she embarked on her studies at Penn College during the Fall 2014 semester.

"She is simply an amazing young woman!" the former co-worker continued. "She not only inspires her fellow students, but college employees and community members."

As a CPE – a liaison to help identify the ongoing needs, resources and areas of interest for the college’s constantly evolving student population – La was characterized as "an incredible role model" for her peers.

Among the activities of which she is most proud was an "Open Floor" event that she organized in support of a respectful discussion space for discussing contentious contemporary topics.

The honoree contributes in less public ways, as well, quietly exhibiting leadership and spreading goodwill.

For example, her nominator noted, she offers to take photographs for people if they donate to local charities devoted to animal welfare.

Student of the Month recognition is bestowed by the college’s Student Government Association numerous times each academic year based on nominees’ commitment, service, academics, leadership and campus involvement.
