Penn College's Energy Conservation Subcommittee shares these National Wildlife Federation tips on improving energy efficiency: In your living space, keep lamps away from thermostats. The thermostat senses the heat produced by the lamp and can change how often your furnace or air conditioner will run. Make sure that draperies, rugs and furniture do not block vents. Vents should be cleaned frequently. Keep furnace and air-conditioner filters clean for maximum efficiency, also; these may be vacuumed and sprayed several times with a dust-diminishing product. This restores the dust-catching ability of the filters for several more uses. Installing draft-blockers or gasket insulators behind light switches and electrical outlets also reduces heat loss.
