Students Vie in Regional Construction-Management Competition

A team of Construction Management students from Pennsylvania College of Technology took first place in the "Design/Build" category in the 13th Annual Associated Schools of Construction Region One Construction Management Competition held recently in New Jersey.
The winning performance makes the students eligible to compete in the National Associated General Contractors Construction Management Competition, to be held in March in Dallas.
Penn College's winning team consisted of Jamie L. Bierly, Millheim; Spencer L. Boone, Bellefonte; David A. Frace, Wapwallopen RR 2; Kevin L. Imes, New Holland; Jarrod B. Krahe, Erie; and Michael A. Snyder, Bloomsburg.
In the regional competition, which was held in Fairfield, N.J., 18 students from Penn College's Construction Management program competed against students from 17 other colleges in the region. Region One covers an area from Virginia to Maine.
The competition featured three categories: Commercial, Heavy/Highway and Design/Build. The competitors were required to prepare a construction business plan, a project safety plan, and a project quality assurance/quality control plan prior to arriving in Fairfield.
Upon arrival, they were given 16 hours to prepare a detailed cost estimate and a construction project schedule that included a Critical Path Method analysis. On the second day, each team was required to give a 15-minute presentation on its construction company and its approach to solving the problem. A 10-minute question-and-answer session followed.
Scoring was conducted by nationally known construction companies. The Commercial category was sponsored by Sordoni Skanska, the Heavy/Highway category was sponsored by Kiewit Construction Co., and the Design/Build category was sponsored by Hensel Phelps Construction Co.
