Students Hone Networking Skills in Advance of Career Fair

Responding to employer feedback that some students struggle with networking at career fairs, a Wednesday event gave job-seekers an opportunity to practice interpersonal skills (and learn from their mistakes) in the nonthreatening atmosphere of Penn’s Inn. Scheduled the week before Penn College’s Fall Career Fair, “Networking Tips: How to Work a Room” was a collaboration among Career Services, Student Activities and Chef Charles R. Niedermyer II, an instructor of baking and pastry arts/culinary arts in the college’s School of Business & Hospitality. After a PowerPoint presentation by the faculty member, more than 65 students circulated among simulated “booths” staffed by fake employers looking to fill internships, part-time vacancies and full-time positions. Two local businesses sent human resources personnel to talk with students, adding to the credibility of the exercise.
