Students Earn Scholarships to Attend Conference on Breast Cancer

Five Pennsylvania College of Technology nursing students were awarded scholarships that enabled them to attend the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition Annual Conference in Harrisburg in October.
At the conference, held Oct. 11 at the Harrisburg Hilton and Towers, the students learned about the latest in breast cancer research, technology, outreach and awareness.
"I am delighted that the generosity of scholarship providers enabled five young nursing students and their professor the opportunity to attend our conference," said Pat Halpin-Murphy, president and founder of the Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition. "I hope that they gained firsthand knowledge and experience that will enhance their formal education."
The five students who were chosen to receive scholarships are Kathryn M. Kleckner, Beech Creek; Tracey A. Lisi, Renovo; Monica A. Loner, Williamsport; Angela L. Mayo, Trout Run; and Susan J. Mills, North Bend.
All five students are pursuing associate degrees in nursing. They were accompanied by Janet McMahon, associate professor of nursing.
"This is a class act of a conference to attend annually," McMahon said. "I am delighted and proud that the Penn College nursing students were selected and given an opportunity to become more educated in this area of health care. The more we know, the more we can educate and empower others with information and knowledge regarding this disease."
Mills said: "It is a wonderful feeling to know that there are so many people out there working to better the treatments and technology for breast cancer. It gives a person hope that our daughters and granddaughters will not have to worry about breast cancer."
