Steer Sets Scoring Record in Otherwise Cheerless Week

For the week completed on Saturday, Pennsylvania College of Technology men’s and women’s basketball teams went winless, all in North Eastern Athletic Conference games, while the college’s wrestling team was idle.
Men’s Basketball
Hosting SUNY Poly on Jan. 24, the Wildcats played tough throughout before losing 88-78. Penn College led by 13 points early and was up 41-40 at the half. The Wildcats surged ahead by four points in the second half before Poly tied the score at 61 and went on for the win. Thomas Ross, of Williamsport, led Penn College scorers with 18 points while Kevin Laurence-El, of Milton, added 17; Marquis Delgado, of Mansfield, 14; and Joe Mangiero, of Staten Island, New York, 11.
On Wednesday at Penn State Berks, Penn College lost, 99-80, despite the fact that five of its players scored in double digits. Landon Muller, of Ottsville, led the way with 20 points while Ross and Bryce Lonsway, of Tiffin, Ohio, each scored 15; Laurence-El had 14; and Delgado, 13, as the Wildcats fell to 3-14 overall and 3-8 in the conference.
Through Saturday in the NEAC South Division, Lancaster Bible was 10-0; Gallaudet, 7-3; Penn State Berks, 6-4; Penn State Abington, 3-6; Penn College, 3-8; Wilson College, 3-8; and Bryn Athyn, 2-7. Morrisville State led the North Division with an 8-2 record while SUNY Poly was 7-2.
Women’s Basketball
On Jan. 24 at home with SUNY Poly, Jamie Steer, of South Williamsport, scored 18 points to become the Penn College women’s all-time leading scorer and Alicia Ross, of Williamsport, scored 22, but it wasn’t enough in a 77-54 defeat. Steer entered the game tied for the record of 1,246 career points with her older sister, Kierstin, whose career spanned the 2009-10 through 2012-13 seasons. SUNY Poly raced to a 55-35 halftime lead to put the game away early.
At Penn State Berks on Wednesday, Penn College fell, 91-74. Steer scored 27 points for the Wildcats while Ross chipped in with 21 and Danielle Mowery, of Shamokin, 10. Ebani Lewis, of Sunbury, had 14 rebounds for Penn College. Ross, a junior, closed to within 85 points of reaching the 1,000-point career scoring mark.
Ending its week on Saturday at home against St. Elizabeth College, the Wildcats lost, 85-66, to drop to 3-12 overall and 3-10 in the NEAC. Steer scored 26 points for Penn College and Ross tallied 24, but St. Elizabeth’s 50 points in the paint, helped by a 53-28 rebound advantage, proved to be too much.
Through Saturday in the NEAC South Division, Lancaster Bible College was 9-1; Bryn Athyn, 9-2; Gallaudet, 8-3; Penn State Abington, 6-4; St. Elizabeth, 7-5; Penn College, 3-10; Penn State Berks, 2-9; and Wilson College, 0-13. SUNY Poly topped the North Division with a 9-0 record.
