Students looking for a bold next step in their educational journey are encouraged to attend an Oct. 28 Open House at Pennsylvania College of Technology, where “future made by hand” is a template for success.

“Visiting a college campus should be an experience. At Open House, students are able to touch, see and explore their future,” said Claire Z. Biggs, assistant director of admissions. “From the state-of-the-art labs to the knowledgeable faculty and staff, Penn College is the place to be if you want to be a tomorrow maker.”

The college will be open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. for prospective students and their families to explore more than 100 bachelor’s, associate and certificate programs. Free bus service will be available on the main campus in Williamsport, and shuttles will transport guests to and from the nearby Lumley Aviation and Schneebeli Earth Science centers throughout the day.

The Madigan Library (left) and Bush Campus Center are two of the facilities that visitors to Pennsylvania College of Technology may tour during Fall Open House on Sunday, Oct. 28.New this year is The Dr. Welch Workshop: A Makerspace at Penn College, which provides resources and training that allow students to create a wide variety of artistic and experiential projects. Open House guests will be introduced to the exciting facility – emblematic of the applied-technology focus of a Penn College education – in hourly sessions throughout the day.

Through the generosity of donors, the makerspace has been outfitted with equipment that would satisfy every artisan’s wish list: saws, sanders, drill presses, a lathe and milling machine, welding and plasma cutting equipment, sewing machines, sergers, vinyl cutters, 3D printers, a CNC router, a laser cutter/engraver, and a host of small hand and power tools that fill the bill for nearly any creative endeavor.

Among the other practical skills on display will be “Save a Life,” a hands-on demonstration by paramedic students. In just 10 minutes, Open House attendees can learn hands-only cardiopulmonary resuscitation as well as how to apply a tourniquet.

Recent additions to Penn College’s ever-responsive curricular portfolio will also be featured, including a brewing and fermentation science major – already attracting notice from industry experts – and concrete science technology.

At this special mission affiliate of Penn State, students learn in hands-on fashion from faculty with real-world experience, using industry-standard equipment and technologies.

Students spend an average of three hours in labs for every hour in lectures, and the average class size is 17. Nine out of 10 students receive financial aid, associate-degree majors can readily transition to bachelor’s-degree programs, and the graduate placement rate is 95 percent.

General information sessions will provide a high-level overview of the college, and leaders from all six schools can answer questions specific to academic majors. What better way to meet your dean than face-to-face at Open House?

And because college doesn’t begin and end in the classroom, visitors can stop by the Campus Life Involvement Fair to learn about student organizations, Career Services, part-time employment and many other ways to maximize the college experience.

Dining units and The College Store will be open, and information on military benefits will be available at the Major General Fred F. Marty Veterans and Military Resource Center.

Faculty, students and alumni – and staff from Financial Aid, Residence Life, Dining Services and Student Activities – will answer questions and direct Open House guests. Coaches from Wildcat Athletics, a full member of NCAA Division III, will also provide one-on-one attention.

Potential enrollees can meet their assigned Admissions counselor before leaving campus so they’ll know their go-to guide to Penn College.

Visit the Open House website to register and build a personalized itinerary for the day; the site features a conveniently organized list of campus activities, as well as travel directions, a campus map and lodging information.

Those unable to attend the Oct. 28 event may schedule a campus tour or plan a visit during the next Open House in Spring 2019.
