Staff/Faculty Softball Team Defeats Students, 15-12

A team of Penn College staff and faculty defeated its student counterpart, 15-12, in a softball game on the college's Athletic Field Monday night. The students jumped to a quick 2-0 lead at the end of the first inning on a two-run homer by Aaron Moyer, according to a game summary from Lisa J. Worth, athletic assistant. The staff/faculty team tied the game in the second inning, with Tony Flint hitting a home run and Eric Ranck getting a two-out RBI double to right field. The students answered with three runs in the bottom of the third to make it 5-2. In the fourth inning, Worth said, the staff/faculty bats got hot: eight runs, in fact, to give the team a 10-5 lead. The students chipped away at the score and tied it at 10 in the bottom of the fifth. The staff/faculty team scored five runs in the sixth inning and didn't give up the lead. The winning team was helped by Ashley Smith's clutch hitting and some spectacular defense at first base. Ranck pitched the team to victory and went 3-for-4 at the plate with a double, triple and a home run just a single away from "hitting for the cycle." Moyer went 4-for-4 for the student team, with three runs scored, and Matt Weiser was 3-for-4 with two runs scored for the students.Photos by Ashlin R. Hollinger, part-time student photographer
