More than two dozen professionals recently gathered at Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Plastics Innovation & Resource Center to learn about rotational molding from some of the most knowledgeable practitioners in the business.

A total of 28 employees from 17 companies and nine states (California, Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Massachusetts, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Tennessee) were represented at the eighth annual Hands-On Rotational Molding and Advanced Materials Workshop, joined by participants from Canada and India.

McQuay, PIRC engineering manager, demonstrates a materials grinder in Penn College’s Rotational Molding Center of Excellence. As in past summers, attendees benefited from the expertise of Paul Nugent, Jerry Ramsey and Terry Gillian, industry luminaries who have become enlightening regulars at the yearly workshops.

They were assisted by Ian C. Killian, PIRC technician; Noah L. Martin, Wilson R. Michael and Logan A. Tate, PIRC research assistants; and Brennan B. Wodrig, PIRC laboratory supervisor and project coordinator.

Satisfaction with the program was evident in testimonials from several of those attending:

  • “This class is an eye-opener for anyone who desires basic knowledge of rotomolding,” said Dennis Byrd, a senior manufacturing engineer with Watkins Manufacturing in Vista, California. “I will go back to work with a handful of tools.”

  • “This course was a giant step in the right direction for my rotational molding knowledge and abilities. This surely enhanced the future quality of our endeavors, personally and for my company," added Don Macleary, associate lab manager-plastics at Philadelphia's EMD Performance Materials. "Only a fool in this business wouldn't take advantage of this!”

  • “The workshop was helpful and informative. The staff and students provided a wonderful learning experience,” said Jennifer Black, a quality group leader at Hedstrom Plastics in Ashland, Ohio. “Paul Nugent is an intelligent source of information regarding rotational molding. I would recommend this course to anyone looking for an educational overview of rotational molding.”
