Registration Open for Summer Residential SMART Girls Session

Girls entering ninth and 10th grades this fall are encouraged to attend Pennsylvania College of Technology's July 11-15 residential program intended to cultivate their interest in math and science.
The college's Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies (SMART Girls) project was developed to offset girls' inclination to avoid those subjects as they enter adolescence. The program offers a varied schedule of activities to show the real-life value of math and science in the working world.
The event includes field trips to Bloomsburg University where girls will participate in team-building activities, including a 50-foot climbing wall and to Penn College's Lumley Aviation Center and Schneebeli Earth Science Center.
Hands-on workshops at the college, an integral component of SMART Girls, will help participants learn what paramedics and X-ray technicians do and why, how to determine fitness levels, and the responsibilities of a photojournalist. Others include using Nerf guns to discover the principles of general ballistic trajectory and analyze how fast projectiles really fly, designing 3-D parts using CAD software, exploring different ways of photographing a scene and altering those images, and more.
Enrollment is limited to the first 50 applicants, each of whom is charged a $90 materials fee. Participants are housed in Penn College residence halls, and all meals are provided.
