Pennsylvania College of Technology will host an April 24 session to encourage a continuing interest in science and math by 10th- and 11th-grade girls.

Penn College's Science and Math Applications in Real-World Technologies (SMART Girls) project was developed to counter girls' worrisome tendency to shun math and the sciences as they move through their crucial high school years. The program, observing its 10th anniversary, offers a varied schedule of hands-on activities to show the real-life worth of math and science in the career world.

The upcoming event includes a trip to the college's Lumley Aviation Center in Montoursville, a main campus tour and participation in a career-exploration activity that will provide the girls with the tools needed to continue with their vocational and educational planning.

Cost for the daylong session, which is open to the first 20 girls who enroll by the April 12 deadline, is $25. To register or to learn more, call 570-327-4502, e-mail or visit online .

The college will host a summer SMART Girls residential experience from July 11-15 for girls entering ninth and 10th grades.
