Professor Presents Paper on Human-Machine Interaction

Asesh K. Das, a professor of computer science at Pennsylvania College of Technology, presented a paper at the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Southeastern Conference, held April 3-6 at the Von Braun Center in Huntsville, Ala.
In his presentation, titled "Designing User Interaction How Can Agile System Analysis Help?" Das talked about the difficulties of everyday household users in operating such devices as remote controllers or digital cameras and proposed a model approach for the devices' manufacturers.
Designing User Interaction comes under the science and technology of human-computer interaction, often called HCI. Users' cognitive abilities are given highest priority in HCI, a major aim of which is to make devices behave as the user wants, not dictating the user to act as the device wishes.
Das claims that system analysis with agility can bring flexibility to designers to incorporate users' cognitive abilities and, as a sequel, a smart device may often have to behave as a dumb (or simpler) one, if the user requires it.
As the premier conference for the IEEE Region encompassing Jamaica and the southeastern United States, Southeastcon 2008 brought together electrical, computer and other engineering and science professionals, faculty and students to share the latest information through technical sessions, tutorials and exhibits.
A member of the School of Business and Computer Technologies faculty since 1994, Das holds a doctorate from Visva-Bharati University, earned master's degrees from North Bengal University and Florida Institute of Technology, and has a bachelor's degree from Calcutta University.
