PPL Corp. Donation to Buy Equipment for College's Electrical Majors

A donation from PPL Corp. will go toward purchase of equipment for Pennsylvania College of Technology’s electrical technology majors.
Teri MacBride, PPL’s regional community relations director, recently delivered a $3,000 check to the college’s Institutional Advancement Office to buy 20 new oscilloscopes for the School of Construction and Design Technologies.
“PPL has provided support for a variety of projects over a sustained period of time,” she said. “We are pleased that, this year, students in the electrical programs are the direct beneficiaries of PPL’s contribution.”
The school’s oscilloscopes are 30 years old, according to Wayne E. Gebhart, assistant professor of electrical technologies/occupations, who said they were only good to 15-MHz signals, and adjustments were becoming difficult.
“The new scopes are good for 30-MHz signals, which will allow for expanded testing and measurements,” he said. “These analog scopes are the best teaching tool for beginning electricians because they learn how the oscilloscope works and how to set the controls for proper operation.”
The school offers a bachelor’s degree in building automation technology; associate degrees in electrical technology, electromechanical maintenance technology and renewable energy technologies; and a certificate in electrical occupations. It also teaches the electrical portion of the on-site power generation major, which leads to a two-year degree from the School of Natural Resources Management.
“Penn College and PPL have had a long-standing relationship, and we appreciate the support of our students and programs,” said Debra M. Miller, director of corporate relations for the college. “PPL has supported many Penn College majors over the years with annual cash gifts, advocacy of the Madigan Library and in-kind donations.
“They actively recruit from the college, as well, employing a number of graduates. In addition, the office of Workforce Development & Continuing Education at Penn College has conducted numerous noncredit training programs for employees of PPL Electric Utilities.”
