Perkins Local Plan Grant Provides Financial Support to College

A $619,212 federal grant for 2011-12 will enable Pennsylvania College of Technology to provide the latest instructional equipment for a variety of academic programs and majors.

The Perkins Local Plan Grant, funded by the U.S. Department of Education through the Pennsylvania Department of Education, aims to help develop the skills of secondary and postsecondary education students enrolled in career and technical-education programs.

The grant funding provides Penn College with the financial support needed to purchase equipment for majors such as legal assistant, dental hygiene, electronics and computer engineering technology, automotive technology, machine tool technology, building construction technology and forest technology.

“Penn College invests significant financial resources in state-of-the-art equipment to ensure that our students are educated on the latest and emerging trends in industry,” said Eugene M. McAvoy, dean of academic services and first year programs. “The funding provided through the Perkins Grant enables us to maintain the high-quality instruction that characterizes a Penn College degree.”

McAvoy added the Perkins Grant funds help the college provide academic support for all students. “The early-intervention and mentoring programs, study-skills workshops and one-on-one tutoring the grant supports help ensure the success of our students,” he said.
