In their final tune-up before Sunday’s Penn State University Athletic Conference/United States Collegiate Athletic Association Championships, Pennsylvania College of Technology wrestlers competed Sunday in the Jayhawk Open at Jamestown (N.Y.) Community College and Wildcat Dan Frankenfield recorded a second-place finish in the 174-pound weight class.

Frankenfield, of Dushore, posted three wins – a pin and two decisions – before falling to Austin Weigel of the University at Buffalo, 4-1, in the finale.

Also for Penn College, Kyle Sunseri, of Athens, went 4-2, including two wins by fall, and finished fourth in the 149-pound division; Aaron Doll, of Glen Rock, went 1-2 and placed fourth at 125 and Dalton Deimler, of Middletown, was 0-1 and finished sixth, also at 125.

Other Wildcat wrestlers and their tournament records include: Joe Champluvier, of Laceyville, at 157 (2-2); Tanner Leid, of Terre Hill, at 157 (1-2); Taylor Porter, of Milton, at 157 (3-2); Cesar Gonzalez, of Woodbridge, Va., at 157 (0-2); Mike Failla, of Beach Lake, at 197 (1-2); and Pat Fitzgerald, of Port Royal, at 197 (2-2). Champluvier and Fitzgerald each had one win by fall for the day.

“It was a good tournament for us in many ways. A couple of guys really wrestled up, like I had been looking for them to do. … I think they’re sort of finding their heart in that they didn’t really stop wrestling, kept wrestling, tried to wrestle through it and I think it’s really going to help us in the postseason,” Wildcats coach Schuyler Frey said.

Looking ahead to Sunday and the PSUAC/USCAA Invitational Championships at Penn State’s Rec Hall, Frey said, “Dan (Frankenfield) is wrestling really well, Kyle Sunseri really has turned the corner the last couple of weeks and my 157-pounders just continue to battle hard. … I hope we can build on what we did this past weekend and get six, eight, 10 place-winners.”

Action on four mats Sunday begins at 11 a.m. Doors open at 8.
