Penn College Women's Tennis Team Set to Open

The Pennsylvania College of Technology women’s tennis team is scheduled to begin its season this week while the college baseball and softball teams went a combined 7-10 as they got their seasons underway south of the border last week.
Women’s Tennis
After his team went winless (0-4) during its fall season, fifth-year coach Robert Kemrer is hopeful of a better spring.
“We knew going into this year that our nonconference (fall) matches would be a lot tougher than our actual conference (spring) matches. … It’s a positive that we played a lot of tough matches going into our conference season,” said Kemrer, whose team was 2-5 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference and 2-11 overall a year ago.
Key singles players include junior Melissa Stabley, of Cogan Station; freshman Carolyn Krasley, of Ephrata; and sophomore Morgan Blackwell, of Beech Creek. Expected to join the squad after playing soccer in the fall are freshmen Jane Herman, of Greencastle, and Valerie Kubalak, of Spring Mills, Kemrer said. In matches, there will be six singles and three doubles events.
“We should be very competitive (in the conference). We did really well in the conference last year," the coach said. "We were right there with a lot of teams, so I’m looking for about the same thing this year – to win some matches and just be as competitive as we can."
Also on the roster are sophomores Rachel Gordon, of Greencastle; Erin Jacob, of Royersford; and MiKaila Lugo-Schlegel, of Lebanon; and freshman Elizabeth Scholl, of Sunbury.
Baseball
On March 6, one day after dropping their season opener, in an early game against Mount Aloysius College, the Wildcats fell, 13-2. They rebounded hours later, however, with their first win of the season, 8-5, over Penn State Allegheny. In the win, Noah Esposito, of Williamsport, went 2 for 5 at the plate with one run batted in and one run scored while Connor Doherty, of Lawrenceville, New Jersey, went 1 for 3 with two RBIs and Bryce Merrill, of South Williamsport, went 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Cole Weachock, of Pottsville, had a double and Cole Hoffman, of Newtown, added a triple and scored a run. Trevor Dolin, of Elliottsburg, went five innings on the mound and got the win.
On Monday, Chris Lopez was a one-man wrecking crew for Lehman College as it topped Penn College, 9-3. Lopez had a first-inning grand slam and added a solo homer in the seventh.
Facing Muhlenberg College in a twin bill on Tuesday, the Wildcats lost 2-1 and 12-4. In the opener, Penn College managed just four hits, including a double by Weachock. Starting pitcher Kyle Fox, of Fleetwood, went five innings and struck out five. Max Bair, of Centre Hall, took the loss in relief. In the second game, Penn College led 3-1 after three innings, but a nine-run sixth inning turned the tide for Muhlenberg. Weachock finished 3 for 3 with a two-run double, Braden Smith, of Elliottsburg, went 2 for 3 with a double and one RBI and Richard Lennon, of Morgantown, went 2 for 4 with a RBI.
On Wednesday, Penn College avenged an earlier loss to Lehman College with a 6-2 win and then blasted the University of Valley Forge, 22-2. Against Lehman, Lennon and Taylor Vandergrift, of Quakertown, each drove in two runs – Lennon doubled and Vandergrift tripled – to back the six-strikeout pitching of Cody Nelson, of South Williamsport. Six Wildcats had multiple hits against Valley Forge with Trevor Route, of Canton, Smith and Ed Suri, of East Hanover, New Jersey, each driving in four runs. Suri homered while Route doubled and tripled. Pitcher Aaron Palmer, of Hanover, got the win with seven innings of work, striking out 10 with no walks.
Penn College closed out its 2016 Myrtle Beach experience on Thursday with an 8-5 loss to Swarthmore College as its record went to 3-6. Vandergrift went 3 for 5 with a double at the plate with two runs scored, Deric Ellerman, of Landisburg, 2 for 3 with two RBIs and a run scored and Hoffman 2 for 5 with a double, one RBI and one run scored. Starting pitcher Brad Walter, of Williamsport, took the loss as the Wildcats left 10 on base.
Softball
In its season opener March 6 against La Roche College, Penn College lost, 8-5. Kelsey Gantz, of South Williamsport, went 2 for 2, Elizabeth Asher, of East Stroudsburg, was 2 for 4 and Devin Heimbach, of Milton, doubled in the loss. In their second game that day, the Wildcats jumped to a 6-0 lead after two innings against Penn State Berks, but Berks battled back for an 11-7 victory.
Facing Anna Maria College on Monday, Taylor Krow, of Mechanicsburg, had two hits and drove in two runs and Asher had two hits, one a double, drove in a run and scored one in a 6-1 win. On the mound, Amanda Kustanbauter, of Muncy, went the seven-inning distance, fanning seven and walking four to pick up the win. Later in the day, Penn College lost to Gwynedd-Mercy University, 6-3.
On Tuesday against Emory & Henry College, Penn College was limited to two hits in a 5-1 defeat. Wildcat pitcher Lauren Stehman, of Elliottsburg, fanned three in six innings and took the loss.
Wednesday was a great day for the Wildcats as they beat both King’s College, 11-10, and Wentworth College, 12-0 in five innings. Trailing 9-2 against King’s in the top of the fifth, Penn College exploded for nine runs in the bottom half of the frame. Krow went 3 for 4 including a double, two RBIs and two runs scored, Meddie Wenk, of Biglerville, was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Taylor Brooks, of Cogan Station, was 2 for 4 with a double, triple and three RBIs. On the mound, Kaustanbauter went the distance for the win, fanning five. Against Wentworth, Brooks tossed a one-hitter with six strikeouts and helped her own cause at the plate by going 4 for 4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs scored. Also for the Wildcats, Gantz was 2 for 2 with a double, three RBIs and two runs scored; Wenk was 3 for 3; Tiana McCormick, of Williamsport, was 2 for 2; and Nicole Lo Furno, of Glen Mills, was 2 for 4. In all, Penn College batters pounded out 16 hits.
Penn College evened its record at 4-4 and ended its Myrtle Beach trip with its third straight victory as it blanked Chatham University, 11-0 in five innings, on Thursday. After scoring two runs in both the first and second innings, the Wildcats tacked on seven in the fourth frame as three Penn College pitchers limited Chatham to two hits. On offense for the Wildcats, Krow went 3 for 3 including a double with 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored, Gantz doubled and drove in three runs and Lo Furno drove in two runs.
