Penn College Teams Have Week of Transition

Athletics
Seasons ended last week for the Wildcat men's cross-country and women's volleyball teams and began for the wrestling and men's and women's basketball squads.
Men's Cross-Country
The Wildcats of coach Mike Paulhamus finished seventh in a 15-team field in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association national championships at Lake Placid, N.Y.
Leading the way was junior Travis Cain, of Bloomsburg, who placed 31st in a time of 30 minutes, 55 minutes over the 8K course. Senior Corvin Oberholtzer, of Wellsboro, finished 38th in a field of 148 in 31:22; freshman Dan Rose, of Albrightsville, was 57th in 32:28; freshman Dan Flynn, of Blairstown, N.J., was 65th with 32:49, freshman Dan Starr, of Stewartstown, and sophomore Ed Knyff, of Ocean Gate, N.J., finished back-to-back at 73rd (33:05) and 74th (33:08), respectively; junior Will Fuka, of Clifton, Va., was 76th in 33:14; junior Robert Forbes, of Warren, was 103rd in 35:20; senior Seth Beckman, of Linden, 105th in 35:42, and junior Joseph Chadowski, of Fairfax, Va., 126th in 38:04.
In team competition, SUNY ESF won with 48 points.
Women's Volleyball
Competing on the national level for its first time ever at the USCAA championships in Louisville, Ky., Penn College went 0-6 during the first two days of the tournament.
On Thursday, coach Bambi Hawkins' team opened with a 2-0 loss to Spalding University. That was followed by a 2-0 loss to Rochester College and 2-1 loss to UC-Clermont. Pool play ended for the Wildcats on Friday with a 2-0 loss to Penn State University Athletic Conference rivalPenn StateMont Alto as they finished 20-13 overall.
Men's Soccer
Four Wildcats earned PSUAC All-Conference honors after the team won its second straight championship and sixth in seven years.
Senior midfielder William DeAngelo, of Dallas, and sophomore forward Chris Brennan, of New Hope, were named to the first team and junior defender Isaac Hostetter, of Lebanon, and junior midfielder Ben Shade, of Fleetwood, earned second team honors. DeAngelo three goals and six assists while Brennan led the team with 14 goals and had three assists. Shade came on strong the second half of the season and had five goals and two assists, including two game-winners. Hostetter anchored the defense that had only a 1.27 goals against average and notched six shutouts on the season.
Penn College finished the season 13-7-2 overall, 9-1-1 in the conference.
Team Tennis
Freshman Adam Smith, of Duncannon, and sophomore Caleb Wise, of Manheim, earned PSUAC All-Conference honors.
In his rookie campaign, Smith finished 5-3 in singles and 7-1 in doubles during the regular season. He finished second in men's first flight singles at the conference championships and teamed with Wise for a second-place finish at the No. 1 men's doubles spot. Wise went 5-2 at the men's No. 4 singles spot during the regular season and also was a conference singles runner-up.
Penn College finished 6-2 during coach Robert Kemrer's first season and was second at the championships.
Men's Basketball
Penn College opened its season on Thursday with a 79-50 home loss to Central Penn College. Greg Gibbs, of Indian Head, Md., led the Wildcats in scoring with 12 points. Scott Fenton, of Dickson City, had seven rebounds.
On Saturday at NCAA Division II Mansfield University, Penn College lost, 111-47. Bryant House, of Columbia Cross Roads, led the Wildcats with 15 points as they dropped to 0-2.
Women's Basketball
The Wildcats dropped a 75-65 decision in their home opener against Central Penn College. Kierstin Steer, of South Williamsport, scored 18 points and Niesha Williams, of Loyalsock Township, added 14 points and nine rebounds.
At home on Saturday against the Newport News, Va., Apprentice School, Penn College dropped a 90-61 decision. Steer led the Wildcats with 26 points as the team dropped to 0-2 overall.
"They're a DIII team with 16 girls, but my girls didn't back down at all. We played an extremely physical game and, in the long run, that's going to help us," Penn College coach Matt Wilt said.
Wrestling
In its season opener Saturday at NCAA Division II Elizabethtown College, the Penn College wrestling team fell, 39-6. Logan Gresock, of Wadsworth, Ohio, scored all of the Wildcats' points with a fall in 43 seconds in the 184-pound weight class.
"The guys showed good aggression and fought to the end. They showed a lot of heart. We're going to go back to practice and will keep working," commented assistant coach Dave Livermore.
