Penn College Teams Go Combined 8-6 During Week

Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball and softball teams continued their seasons while the men’s tennis team won both of its matches as the season neared a finish.
Baseball
The Wildcats continued their winning ways, starting off the week April 13 with a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Mont Alto by scores of 9-2 and 10-9. In the first game, Nicholas Pupo, of Lewistown, tossed a four-hitter, striking out 10, while Zach Weil, of Kutztown, went 2 for 3 at the plate with two runs scored and Cole Weachock, of Pottsville, went 2 for 2 with one run scored and an RBI double. Penn College used a Mont Alto walk, hit batter and throwing error to rally with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning and win the second game. Leading Wildcat hitters were Jeremy Rall, of Williamsport, who was 3 for 5 with two doubles and three runs scored; Cody Buterbaugh, of Conestoga, who was 3 for 4 with a double and two runs scored; Josh Longsderff, of Columbia, who was 1 for 2 with a run and three RBI; and Weachock, who had three RBIs.
On Wednesday, the Wildcats were awarded two PSUAC forfeit wins from Penn State Fayette.
Playing at Penn State Beaver on Friday, Penn College saw its 12-game Penn State University Athletic Conference win streak snapped in the first game, 9-8, but it bounced back to win the second, 2-1, to improve to 13-3 in the conference and 19-8 overall. Weil, Cody Buterbaugh and Evan Vigna each had two hits for Penn College in the opener while Rall drove in two runs. In the second game, Longsderff got the mound win with run support from Tanner Kibe, of Reedsville, and Weil, the latter of whom went 2 for 3 at the plate.
Also, it was announced that Longsderff had been named the PSUAC Pitcher of the Week for the period ending April 13, picking up two of his team’s six wins during the week including a complete game shutout against Penn State York. Going into Friday’s game, Longsderff led the Wildcats and the PSUAC with five wins and had an era of 2.59 with 29 strikeouts and just seven earned runs in 24.1 innings.
In the Week 3 USCAA Coaches Poll, Penn College was tied for seventh with St. Joseph’s College in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Softball
Going up against conference unbeaten Penn State Mont Alto on April 13, Penn College couldn’t find the offense it needed, managing just two hits in each game, and wound up losing by scores of 1-0 and 2-0. In the opener, Brianna Brewer, of Jersey Shore, allowed five hits in seven innings while striking out 11, but gave up two singles and a walk in the sixth inning that led to Mont Alto’s lone run. In the second game, Arika Stopper, of Williamsport, also allowed five hits in seven innings, but two hits in the sixth inning led to both of Mont Alto’s runs that made the difference. Macie Lucas, of Reedsville, had a hit in each game for Penn College.
On Friday, the Wildcats dropped two games at Elmira (N.Y.) College by scores of 2-0 and 8-0 and managed just three hits while striking out 19 times.
Right back in action on Saturday, Penn College split at Penn State Greater Allegheny, winning 5-3 and losing 8-7 to go to 2-4 in the conference and 6-12 overall. Stopper fanned eight in picking up the win and was backed offensively by Alexandra Brennan, of St. Clair, who had two hits and drove in three runs. Brennan’s hot bat continued in the second game with three more hits and two RBIs, but Allegheny pulled out the with a single run in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Penn College dropped four spots and was ranked No. 14 in the third USCAA Coaches Poll.
Men’s Tennis
Penn College scored a clean, 9-0 sweep of Penn State Hazleton on both Monday and Thursday. Winning both their singles and doubles matches for the Wildcats were Nathan Scott, of Sunbury; Jordan Rodgers, of Biglerville; Chris Morrin, of Morrisville; James Jeffries, of Bedford; Noah Stahl, of Sunbury; and Taylor Herb, also of Sunbury. Penn College now is 2-1 in the PSUAC and 4-5 overall with one match remaining.
Wildcat Extras
It was announced during the week that the college has partnered with Lids Team Sports to have Nike become the official provider of uniforms, footwear and equipment for its intercollegiate athletic teams. The three-year agreement will begin July 1 with the department procuring the Nike products exclusively from Lids.
