Penn College Students Participate in Major Plastics Conference

Six Pennsylvania College of Technology plastics students enriched their education by attending the Society of Plastics Engineers 32nd Annual Blow Molding Conference in Atlanta earlier this month.
The plastics and polymer engineering technology majors participated in several technical presentations related to blow molding and networked with potential employers throughout the three-day event.
“Our students were able to take a closer look into the blow molding industry and learn about new and emerging technologies,” said Tom J. Van Pernis, instructor of plastics and polymer technology, who accompanied the Penn College contingent. “They distributed resumes and business cards throughout the event. Companies are extremely interested in plastics students who graduate from Penn College.”
Penn College is among just a handful of institutions nationwide with plastics degree programs that are accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET. The college offers an associate degree in plastics and polymer technology and a bachelor’s degree in plastics and polymer engineering technology.
“We are very proud of our nearly 100-percent placement rate for graduates of both plastics majors,” said Timothy E. Weston, associate professor of plastics and polymer technology and department head. “Participating at major industry functions, such as the Blow Molding Conference, enhances students’ education and impresses potential future employers.”
The students who attended the conference were: Seth E. Cook, of Mountville; Hannah G. Maize, of Riverside; Zachary A. Meredick, of Danville; Sapphire E. Naugle, of Jersey Shore; Logan A. Tate, of Williamsport; and Anthony P. Wagner, of Lock Haven.
The SPE Blow Molding Division covered the students’ costs.
SPE is the largest plastics professional society in the world, offering technical information, training, networking and knowledge sharing. Its Blow Molding Division focuses on the manufacturing process that forms hollow industrial parts and containers from thermoplastic materials.
