Penn College Staff Member Offers Information on Dual Enrollment

Beverly A. Hunsberger, college transition specialist in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Outreach for K-12 Office, recently provided information about the college’s dual-enrollment program at a Statewide Dual Enrollment Meeting.
The meeting, held Jan. 30 at Reading Area Community College, brought together representatives from the state’s 14 community colleges – as well as Penn College and University of Pittsburgh – and the president and CEO of the Pennsylvania Commission for Community Colleges.
The colleges shared information and best practices regarding dual-enrollment programs – which allow high school students to take college courses. In turn, the commission will inform Pennsylvania’s new administration and state policymakers.
Each of the 16 colleges in attendance offers some form of dual enrollment for high school students.
Hunsberger offered information about Penn College’s dual-enrollment program, Penn College NOW, which is unique in that most of its offerings are technology-related and offered at no cost to the high school students.
Penn College NOW courses are taught at the high school during the regular school day by a high school teacher, with the same academic accountability as experienced by a fully enrolled student on the Penn College campus. Each high school teacher is matched with a Penn College faculty liaison to ensure courses maintain the rigor of their counterparts on campus.
Hunsberger coordinates the college’s Penn College NOW dual-enrollment program. She holds a degree from the college in individual studies.
