Mount Carmel Area School District is using Pennsylvania College of Technology videos to complement the programming offered on its high school’s student-operated television station, WKMCTV.

Channel 13 on Service Electric Cable, WKMCTV serves Mount Carmel, Shamokin, Southern Columbia and parts of Central Columbia, Bloomsburg and Line Mountain school districts.

“I believe the videos will help make the connection between the students’ current studies and the actual application they might observe in some of the videos,” said David McFee, instructional technology specialist and television studio director for Mount Carmel. “Penn College is on the cutting edge of technologies that will be in demand for years to come, and I believe the career opportunities shown will be attractive to many of our students.”

For the programming, WKMCTV is drawing from the video library available on Penn College’s popular YouTube Channel. The site contains more than 140 videos, ranging from student profiles to campus news stories to episodes of the award-winning public television series, “degrees that work.”

Initially, WKMCTV will be rotating the 38 “In Their Own Words” videos, which explore Penn College majors through the eyes of students. The videos will air on alternating school mornings at 7:50 and 8:10 a.m., during halftime of school events covered by the station and on closed-circuit television throughout the Mount Carmel junior and senior high schools.

“Penn College students share their own views and experiences in the video profiles,” said Elaine J. Lambert, director of college information and community relations. “By watching the videos, high school students can get a unique perspective on college and career preparation. It may be the spark they need for inspiration in considering their own futures. I am pleased that educators at Mount Carmel saw the opportunity to help inspire their students in this way.”

“I’m hoping the videos will provide information that will be new and surprising to most viewers, especially students,” McFee said. “I don’t think many people in our viewing area are aware of the variety of studies and careers that are being offered at Penn College. Many of the courses at Penn College make sense in a world where technology is changing so rapidly.”

Penn College is a special mission affiliate of The Pennsylvania State University, committed to applied technology education. The college enrolls nearly 6,000 students in bachelor’s, associate and certificate programs relating to more than 100 different career areas.
