Penn College Plastics Student Earns SPE Scholarship

A Pennsylvania College of Technology senior has been awarded one of two annual scholarships from the Society of Plastics Engineers Pittsburgh Section.
Tamara R. Rader, of Knox, enrolled in the college’s plastics and polymer engineering technology bachelor-degree major, received the Pittsburgh Section Annual Scholarship. The $2,000 award is given to a strong undergraduate student who attended high school within the Pittsburgh region and who is interested in a plastics career.
“The Penn College plastics and polymer engineering technology faculty are very pleased that Tamara was recognized as an outstanding student by the Pittsburgh section of SPE,” said Timothy E. Weston, associate professor of plastics and polymer engineering technology and department head. “It is particularly satisfying when our students from western Pennsylvania receive recognition because of the many employment opportunities in that region.”
A Dean’s List student, Rader earned a plastics and polymer technology associate degree in 2012. She is active in the Penn College SPE student chapter and completed an internship in the plastics industry last summer. She is scheduled to graduate with her bachelor’s degree in May.
SPE is dedicated to promoting the scientific and educational aspects of the plastics engineering profession. Membership in SPE includes approximately 16,000 plastics professionals in more than 84 countries. The Pittsburgh SPE Section is one of the organization’s geographically based technical groups.
Penn College is one of only five colleges in the nation offering plastics and polymer degree programs accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET.
