Penn College Physics Professor Heads Professional Organization

David S. RichardsDavid S. Richards, associate professor of physics at Pennsylvania College of Technology, was elected president of the Central Pennsylvania Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers.

Richards took the post after a term as the association's vice president. He organized the group's 2006 annual spring meeting, in which approximately 70 college and high school teachers participated in a two-day conference on the Penn College campus. The conference included a plenary talk from Bulent Atalay, author of "Math and the Mona Lisa."

In January, Richards attended a joint conference of the American Astronomical Society and the American Association of Physics Teachers in Seattle. During the weeklong meeting, he participated in a workshop on "Teaching Astronomy With Technology" and attended talks on current research in physics education and astronomy.

Richards earned a bachelor's degree in physics from Mary Washington College, where he was selected as the physics department's featured alumnus of the year for 2006-07.He earned a master's degree in physics from the University of Alabama andis pursuing a doctorate in instructional systems at The Pennsylvania State University.
