Penn College lacrosse, women’s basketball teams win

In action over the past week for Pennsylvania College of Technology athletic teams, the men’s lacrosse and women’s basketball squads each tasted victory.
Men’s lacrosse
Hosting Juniata College on Sunday, Penn College dominated in its nonconference season opener with a 15-5 victory. James Thatcher, of Bala Cynwyd, led the Wildcats with three goals, six assists and nine points, while Sam Hills, of Maynard, Massachusetts, had three goals, two assists and five points; Trevor Soli, of Redding, Connecticut, had three goals; and Brendan Kuczma, of New Fairfield, Connecticut, added two goals. Penn College led in shots, 43-22; shots on goal, 22-12; ground balls, 49-28; and faceoffs, 18-5. In goal, starter James Cella, of Cape May, New Jersey, made seven saves and earned the win.
Women’s basketball
In United East play at Penn State Harrisburg on Wednesday, Penn College dropped a 61-50 decision. The Wildcats led by as many as six points in the first half before Harrisburg went ahead 29-26 at the intermission. In the third quarter and the game tied at 36, Harrisburg took advantage of three Penn College turnovers over the final 1:43 to go out in front 43-36 at the turn for home and use a 10-0 roll to take control in the fourth, going on to lead by as many as 15 before the finish. Maci Ilgen, of Spring Mills, and Rachel Teats, of Middleburg, each scored 12 points for the Wildcats, while Ja’Quela Dyer, of Dover, Delaware, grabbed 15 rebounds and Ilgen pulled down 11. Harrisburg won both games in the season series.
On Saturday at home with Penn State Abington, the Wildcats earned a season split after an 84-63 win that improved their record to 7-14 overall and 6-8 in the conference; the first time since 2014-15 they have posted six conference wins and the second time since that same season they have seven overall wins. Penn College used a 19-11 second quarter to open a 32-23 halftime lead and outscored Abington 29-15 in the third period to put the game away. Kayleigh Miller, of Sayre, came off the bench to lead the Wildcats with 20 points while Cassi Kuhns, of Loyalsock Township, chipped in with 19 points, Teats 13 and Ilgen 11. Dyer led with 11 rebounds. Kuhns’ season-high offensive output pushed her Penn College career scoring total to 807. Before the game, Kuhns, Ilgen and Makaya Shadle, of Galeton, were honored on Senior Day.

At Penn State Harrisburg in a United East game on Wednesday, Penn College lost, 79-61. After six first-half lead changes, Harrisburg opened an eight-point, 33-25, lead with 4:25 showing and led 40-33 at the intermission. Chris Coyne, of Glen Mills, hit a trey to pull Penn College back to within six at 52-46 with 12:18 remaining before Harrisburg led by as many as 19 before winning by 17. Coyne led the Wildcats with 21 points and Gavin Barrett, of Roselle, New Jersey, handed out 10 assists as Harrisburg took both games in the season series.
Hosting Penn State Abington in a UE game on Saturday, Penn College fell, 74-63, to drop to 5-16 overall and 5-9 in the conference. In their season series, each team won on the road. During the first half, neither team led by more than five points. In the second half, Abington used a 14-0 burst to open a 48-35 advantage with 16:05 left and went on to lead by as many as 17 and winning by 11. Barrett topped Penn College with 21 points and eight assists while Jesse White, of Harrisburg, was tops with 13 rebounds. Before the game, White was honored on Senior Day.

Wrestling
Competing on the road over the weekend in separate dual-match action, Penn College lost on Saturday at SUNY Brockport, 43-6 to Brockport and 31-21 to Alfred State College and then on Sunday at the RIT Duals the Wildcats fell 45-3 to RIT and 37-6 to SUNY Oneonta as they saw their season record go to 5-13.
Against SUNY Brockport: Patrick Snoke, of Northampton, scored the team’s lone points with a pin in 2:41 in the 133-pound weight class.
Against Alfred State College: Penn College built a 21-3 lead after the 157-pound bout, only to see Alfred State score the next 28 points to take the match. Early Wildcat winners included Ryan Berstler, of Middletown, at 125, with a fall; Snoke at 133, with a forfeit; Noah Hunt, of Muncy, at 141, with a decision; and Logan Ledebohm, of Mechanicsburg, at 157, with a pin.
Against RIT: Snoke’s 6-4 win by decision at 133 provided the lone Penn College points.
Against SUNY Oneonta: A 6-1 decision win by Berstler at 125 and Ledebohm’s 10-3 decision win at 157 accounted for all of the team’s points.
For the weekend, Snoke ended 3-1, while Berstler and Ledebohm both finished 2-2.
Esports
Penn College League of Legends and CS:GO teams each posted wins last week as the CS:GO improved to 1-1 and League of Legends to 1-2. In other action, the Rocket League and Overwatch teams both lost, 3-0, to drop to 0-3 and in CIL Road racing, the Wildcats finished 13 of 26.
