Carl L. Shaner, director of health services at Pennsylvania College of Technology, has been chosen by national ballot as chair-elect of the Nurse-Directed Health Services Section of the American College Health Association.

That division – one of nine that reflect the diverse professions of  association members – addresses the specific knowledge and skill-enhancement needs of nurse-directed health services in higher education and promotes the dissemination of current information relevant to the field.

“Carl has been an active member and leader in ACHA since beginning his tenure at Penn College,” said Elliott Strickland, chief student affairs officer. “We are extremely proud that he has been selected by his peers nationwide, and I know he will bring the same level of hard work and professionalism to ACHA as he has to Penn College.”

In addition, the section may develop and promote standards or guidelines for nurse-directed student health services.

Shaner will assist the current chair of the section at the annual ACHA meeting in San Antonio, Texas, in June 2014 and will assume full chairmanship at the association's June 2015 meeting in Orlando, Fla.

During the past 10 years with the association, Shaner has served as a facilitator, presider and secretary for the nurse-directed section. Three years ago, he and Strickland made a national presentation to ACHA members about Penn College’s Impaired Student Recovery Area.
