Six Pennsylvania College of Technology golfers will be vying for top honors Monday and Tuesday in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships on the Penn State Blue Course, while the college men’s and women’s tennis teams wrapped up their fall seasons this past week.

Representing the college will be Ned Baumbach, of Elizabethtown; Tyler Marks, of Forked River, New Jersey; Evan Johnson, of Towanda; Ryen Persun, of Linden; Jordan Hillegas, of Lancaster; and Mike Lautensack, of Berwyn. Marks and Hillegas are sophomores and the rest freshmen. The low four scores will count toward team rankings.

“We’ve seen some good things and the guys have been working hard,” coach Matt Haile said in assessing his team’s season so far.

“Ned has been the leader on the team as far as scoring average (about 80). He has been solid all year and that’s what I expected of him. I’m hoping for a breakthrough round from him up at Penn State, scoring in the 70s, which I think he is capable of.

“Looking at the rest of the lineup, we’ve had some good scores; not quite where they need to be to contend, where I thought we may have been early on in the season, but certainly a lot of good things came in the regular season practicewise and things are moving forward with their games,” continued the coach, in his seventh season.

“I look forward to seeing how they do up at Penn State and hopefully the two-day events that we had during the regular season have prepared them,” Haile said.

“Everyone in the lineup is capable of being in the 80s and that’s where I would like to see them. It’s just a matter of putting it all together,” the coach said.

Sunday’s practice round will be the first on the course for four of his players and Haile hopes it gives them a good idea where they need to be in the tournament.

“I think this course sets up well for a lot of them, so we’ll see how things pan out,” he added.

In their final tuneup Monday, the Wildcats finished eighth in a 14-team field after their top four players combined for a 363 at the Dutchmen Classic hosted by Lebanon Valley College. Lebanon Valley Blue won the event with a 312. Baumbach led Penn College with an 82, good for 17th place among 64 golfers.

Men’s, Women’s Tennis
In nonconference action against Susquehanna University on Tuesday, the Penn College men dropped a 7-2 decision while the women lost 8-1. Individual winners for the Penn College men were Ben Leibig, of Lebanon, at No. 1 singles, and Seth Strickland, of Morwood, at No. 6 singles. Leibig improved to 3-1 on the season. For the Penn College women, Melissa Stabley, of Cogan Station, won at No. 1 singles to go to 3-1 on the season. The women’s team ended its fall season with an 0-4 record.

In the fall season finale Wednesday, the Penn College men lost to crosstown rival Lycoming College, 8-1. Chris Morrin, of Morrisville, got the lone Wildcats win at No. 2 singles as the team wrapped up its fall season with a 1-4 record.

“Coming in, I thought we were going to have a pretty solid men’s team. We finished 1 and 4, but I thought that two or three of our other matches could have gone either way. We were really close. I thought that we played pretty well,” said fifth-year coach Robert Kemrer.

“On the women’s side, we struggled (with low numbers), which hurt us. I’m hoping to get a little more depth on the team going into the spring,” the coach continued.

“I’m looking for us to put in quite a bit of work over the offseason and get ready for the spring season and hopefully do a little better there,” he said.
