Penn College Golf Season Ends; Women Win in Soccer

The fall season came to an end for the Pennsylvania College of Technology golf team while the college’s women’s soccer team won both of its North Eastern Athletic Conference matches to stay among the leaders in action last week.
Golf
Competing in the United States Collegiate Athletic Association National Championships on Monday and Tuesday at the Penn State Blue Course, Penn College finished 10th in an 18-team field. Cleary University won the team title with a 609 score while the Wildcats recorded a 694.
Individually for Penn College, Ned Baumbach, of Elizabethtown, tied for 30th with rounds of 80-85–165; Mike Johnson, of Towanda, tied for 41st after an 85-83–168; Ryen Person, of Linden, tied for 66th with an 85-95–180; Tyler Marks, of Forked River, New Jersey (93-93–186), and Mike Lautensack, of Berwyn (88-98–186), both tied for 75th; and Joshua Stall, of Niverville, had rounds of 99-101–200 and tied for 95th in a 110-player field. Cleary’s Devin Young took medalist honors with a 68-73–141.
“I was really pleased with how they played the first day. Ned played his average, and I was hoping he would have gone a little lower (on Tuesday), but that didn’t happen,” said coach Matt Haile, noting that course conditions on the second day were harder than on Monday.
“Mike Johnson had his best two days of the season, which was great to see, and Mike Lautensack had a career-best on the first day,” the coach, in his seventh season, continued.
“We were in seventh place after the first day … we lost some ground on the second day, but overall I think it was a good experience for the guys,” Haile said.
The team’s NEAC season will take place in the spring and Haile said the amount of work his players put in over the winter will determine how things go then.
“The college purchased an indoor hitting net and I hope they utilize that. The guys that play well in the spring are the ones who will utilize that and the guys who don’t, that will show come spring when they’re a little rusty,” he added.
Women’s Soccer
On Oct. 11 against Wells College in the NEAC, the Lady Wildcats got two goals from Hanna Williams, of Marion, New York, in a 3-1 victory. Angela Maniscalco, of Muncy, put Penn College on the scoreboard at the 35:54-minute mark before Williams scored at 58:58 and 62:15. Wells got its goal at the 77:05 mark. The Wildcats led in shots, 15-11 (8-6 on goal), but Wells led in corner kicks, 10-2.
Penn College made it a 2-0 NEAC week on Saturday when it blanked St. Elizabeth, 7-0. Robyn Beddow, of Lancaster, and Hailee Hartman, of Lampeter, each scored a goal and had an assist for the Wildcats, who improved to 7-1-1 in the conference and 7-6-2 overall. Penn College led in shots, 31-0 (17-0 on goal), and in corner kicks, 9-0.
Through Saturday, Penn State Berks led the NEAC with a 8-0 mark, followed by Penn College at 7-1-1, Penn State Abington 7-1, SUNY Poly 5-1-1, Keuka College 7-2, Lancaster Bible College 6-2, Wells College 4-5, Cazenovia 3-6, Morrisville State 3-6, SUNY Cobleskill 1-6, Wilson College 1-7, Gallaudet 1-8 and St. Elizabeth 0-8.

On Tuesday in nonconference action at Juniata College, Penn College was blanked, 3-0. Juniata led in shots, 32-5 (23-3 on goal), and in corner kicks, 12-1.

Hosting Penn State Harrisburg in nonconference action on Monday, Penn College lost, 1-3 (19-25, 13-25, 28-26, 13-25). Sophie Coldsmith, of Gettysburg, led the Wildcats with 22 digs.
Closing out its NEAC schedule at home with matches on Friday and Saturday, Penn College lost to Penn State Berks on Friday, 3-0 (25-13, 25-11, 25-11); and to Lancaster Bible, 3-0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-14); and Gallaudet University, 3-0 (25-9, 25-12, 25-12), on Saturday to end 0-12 in the conference and go to 1-23 overall. During the three matches for Penn College, Felicia Webber, of West Perry, totaled 29 digs and Coldsmith had 28 assists.

Men’s, Women’s Cross-Country
Closing out its regular season at the Gettysburg Invitational on Saturday, the Penn College men finished 21st among 24 teams while there weren’t enough Lady Wildcats to compete as a team. Liam McGarvey, of Cogan Station, led the Penn College men over the 8K course as he finished 95th in a field of 154 in 29:27.1. Erin Sullivan, of Elizabethtown, was the leading Penn College woman as she finished 250th among 280 in 31:12 over 6K. The season ends with the NEAC championships on Oct. 31.
Women’s Tennis
Also during the week, it was announced that Penn College’s Melissa Stabley, of Cogan Station, was chosen as the NEAC West Women's Tennis Player of the Week. The junior picked up the Wildcats' lone point during a match with Susquehanna on Oct. 6, as she won her No. 1 singles match in straight sets by the scores of 6-4, 6-0. The win left her with a 3-1 record during fall play.
