The Gallery at Penn College
The Gallery at Penn College is celebrating its 13th season with a dynamic roster of programming showcasing a range of artistic mediums addressing diverse social topics, including mental health, human rights, consumerism and compassion.
“The new season offers a series of thought-provoking exhibitions that tackle social justice and human rights issues,” said Penny Griffin Lutz, gallery director. “The first exhibition of the season, ‘Mindful,’ embraces difficult questions regarding our perceptions of mental health and attempts to bring this common illness out in the open to initiate dialogue and understanding. ‘Mindful’ features work by contemporary artists who have either been diagnosed with mental illness or have been affected by it through friends or family.”
Following “Mindful,” which runs Aug. 16 through Oct. 11, are: “American Epic,” Oct. 25 to Dec. 12, showcasing relief prints by muralist Jesse Shaw, who articulates the American story via topics like technology, rituals, history and religion; “The Art of Influence: Breaking Criminal Traditions,” Jan. 15 to Feb. 28, a group exhibition of 22 artists’ works exploring human rights atrocities in global cultures; “Every Which Way,” March 19 through April 18, an interactive installation of Abraham Ferraro’s mail-able sculptures; “Graphic Design 2019,” April 30 through May 10, the annual exhibition of Penn College graphic design seniors’ portfolios; “Sustainable Design 2019,” May 16 to 23, the inaugural exhibition of architectural design work by Penn College seniors in building science and sustainable design majors; and “The Hundred Dresses Project: We Are All in This Together,” June 4 to July 23, a letterpress and mixed media display inspired by the classic children’s book “The Hundred Dresses,” first published in 1944.
The opening and closing exhibitions – “Mindful” and “The Hundred Dresses Project” – will also feature special workshops.
The Gallery at Penn College is on the third floor of the Madigan Library. In addition to serving as an educational resource for Penn College students and a cultural asset to the college and community, the gallery is dedicated to promoting art appreciation through exhibitions of contemporary art. Admission to the gallery is free.
