Penn College Board Welcomes New Directors

Two new members were welcomed today to the Board of Directors at Pennsylvania College of Technology, a special mission affiliate of The Pennsylvania State University.

Appointed to the Board by the Corporation for Penn State were Dr. Craig D. Weidemann, vice president for outreach at Penn State; and John M. Young, president of Young Industries, a Muncy firm engaged in the design, manufacture and sale of bulk materials processing equipment.

Young began his service at today's Board meeting. Dr. Weidemann, who attended today's session, will take his seat on the Board officially next month.

Dr. Weidemann was named Penn State's vice president for outreach in 2003. He oversees the coordination of the university's external outreach initiatives and has responsibility for Continuing and Distance Education/World Campus, Public Broadcasting and Cooperative Extension.

Prior to his appointment at Penn State, Dr. Weidemann was vice provost and executive assistant to the president at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. He also served as associate provost for academic affairs at UMBC.

Dr. Weidemann also has served as associate vice president for research and dean of the College of Graduate and Extended Education at Towson University, where he led the campus graduate program, research agenda and academic outreach initiative. He also has held administrative positions in continuing education at The Johns Hopkins University and the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.

He received his bachelor's degree in psychology from Illinois State University, his master's degree in counseling psychology from Sangamon State University (now the University of Illinois at Springfield), and his Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Georgia.

Young earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Penn State and a master's of business administration in finance and economics from the Amos Tuck School at Dartmouth College.

He was a trustee for the Penn College predecessor, Williamsport Area Community College, from 1987-89, and he also has served on the Penn College Advisory Board. Currently, he serves on the Penn College Foundation Board.

Young and his wife, Sue, have established scholarships at Penn College and Penn State in the name of Young's father, Henry T. Young, who founded Young Industries in 1947. They also initiated, in Sue Young's name, the first scholarship at Penn State for the Lady Lions basketball team.

Young is vice chair of both the Williamsport-Lycoming Foundation and the Industrial Properties Corp., an economic-development affiliate of the Williamsport-Lycoming Chamber of Commerce. He serves on the boards of the Williamsport Hospital Foundation and the Muncy Cemetery Association.

He and his wife reside in Williamsport. They have three daughters and two grandchildren.
