Penn College Basketball Teams Set to Step Into Conference Play

With their preseason games behind them, the men's and women's basketball teams at Pennsylvania College of Technology are set to step into Penn State University Athletic Conference action Wednesday at home against Penn State Hazleton. The women (2-3 overall) play at 6 p.m. and the men (1-4) at 8 p.m.

In a preseason poll of the conference's 13 coaches, the Penn College men are picked to finish fourth and the women fifth. In the men's poll, defending champ Penn State Beaver was tabbed to repeat with Penn State Wilkes-Barre second and Penn State DuBois third. In the 12-coach women's poll, defending champ Penn State Beaver also was picked to repeat, followed by Penn State Brandywine, Penn State Schuylkill and Penn State Greater Allegheny.

Penn College's Leroy Joiner (Williamsport) was a men's preseason All-Conference First Team pick and Greg Solyak (Lititz) a Second Team choice. For the women, Penn College's Kierstin Steer (South Williamsport) was a preseason All-Conference Second Team pick.

FLASHBACK Men's Basketball Great defense throughout helped the Wildcats get their first win of the season Monday, 61-59 over NCAA Division III Alfred (N.Y.) University. Joiner scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, while Solyak poured in 19 points as Penn College built a 28-7 lead early and led 56-45 before Alfred staged a late comeback.

Women's Basketball Stepping up against NCAA Division III Alfred (N.Y.) University, Penn College fell, 73-39. Tasha Stover (Bellefonte) and Hilary Rice (Biglerville) each scored 10 points for the Wildcats. Penn College shot just 20 percent from the field.

Bowling In their second Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference match of the season Nov. 18 at Jordan Lanes in Whitehall, Penn College dominated: The men's Blue Division teams finished 1-2 in a nine-team field and the women's Gold Division team was first among four teams. For the women, Leann Folk (Paxtonville) had a high three-game series of 714 and Rebecca Rudy (Lancaster) a high single game of 258. For the men, Derek Hoover (Pleasant Gap) led the way with a 676 series and 267 high single game.
