Penn College Basketball Teams Go 1-3 on Week

Returning to action after a near-monthlong semester break, Pennsylvania College of Technology men’s and women’s basketball teams went 1-3 last week, each losing to an NCAA Division III opponent and splitting in their return to Penn State University Athletic Conference play.

Men In a high-scoring home game Wednesday against D-III Misericordia University, the Wildcats rallied from an 18-point deficit to pull within two in the last minute, before losing by six, 93-87. Greg Solyak (Lititz) scored a personal season-high 30 points and pulled down 11 rebounds, while Leroy Joiner (Williamsport) scored 20 points and had 10 caroms. With his 20 points, Joiner moved past Craig Flint (1,196) into third place on the college men’s all-time scoring list with 1,210 points. Graduated Joe Simon is the leader with 1,425 and Solyak has 1,282. On the bright side, Penn College outrebounded the Cougars, 37-35, and hit seven of eight foul shots (87.5 percent), after averaging in the low 50-percent range most of the season. The Wildcats outscored Misericordia from the field, 34-32 in total field goals, but the visitors hit 21 of 29 free throws; going to the foul line numerous times as a result of Penn College’s aggressive defense.

Saturday at Penn State Fayette, Penn College improved to 3-0 in the PSUAC and 4-6 overall with a 77-64 win. Joiner led the Wildcats offense with 25 points and increased his career total to 1,235, while Solyak chipped in with 17 points and now has 1,299 for his career. Nico Italiani (Easton) scored 13 points.

Women Against Misericordia on Wednesday, Penn College fell behind 23-0 at the start, trailed 47-16 at the half and couldn’t recover in an 89-34 loss. Kierstin Steer (South Williamsport) led the Wildcats offense with 10 points. Penn College shot just 24 percent from the field to Misericordia’s 55 percent. The Wildcats committed 31 turnovers.

On the road Saturday at Penn State Fayette, Steer scored 24 points and Hilary Rice (Biglerville) added 15 in a 74-67 loss that saw Penn College drop to 2-1 in the conference and 4-5 overall.
