Penn College Baseball, Men's Tennis Teams Have Perfect Week

Over the past week, the Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball team and men’s tennis teams were unbeaten.



Baseball
Hosting Cazenovia College on Saturday in its North Eastern Athletic Conference opener, Penn College won by scores of 3-1 and 8-4. In the opener, a two-run, fifth-inning single by Cody Cline, of Waynesboro, provided the winning margin while Nathan Holt, of Shippensburg, went the seven-inning distance on the mound, allowing just two hits. In the second game, the Wildcats trailed 4-0 after the top of the sixth inning before rallying for three runs in the bottom of the frame and adding five more in the eighth. Richard Lennon, of Morgantown, was the catalyst in both innings, hitting a three-run homer in the sixth and a two-run double in the eighth. He ended the game 4-for-4 and also scored twice. Nate Lowe, of East New Market, Maryland, also plated two runs in the eighth inning with a double.


At home on Sunday against Wells College, the Wildcats improved to 4-0 in the conference and 10-6 overall with a sweep by scores of 8-0 and 15-0. In the opener, pitchers Cody Nelson, of South Williamsport, and Brandon Barnyak, of Karthaus, combined on a one-hitter with Nelson going six innings and getting the win. On offense, Colton Riley, of Danville, smashed a three-run home run in a four-run third inning. In the nightcap, Riley and Brittan Kittle, of Millville, each hit home runs to power the offense while three Penn College pitchers combined on a two-hitter with starter Max Bair, of Centre Hall, striking out eight and earning the win. Kittle finished the game going 5-for-6 at the plate, including a double, with six RBIs and Riley drove in three runs.


Last Monday, it was announced that freshman Riley was named the NEAC Player of the Week after hitting .800 in a pair of wins the week before. In an 11-9 victory over Cabrini, the first baseman went 3-for-3 with two doubles, a home run and three RBIs. He added a two-run home run in the second game against Cabrini to finish the week with five RBIs and six runs scored. Over the two games, Riley posted a .875 on-base percentage and a 2.400 slugging percentage.


In North Eastern Athletic Conference action this week: At Keuka College (5-8 overall), 1 p.m. Saturday.


Last meeting vs. Keuka College: Won 10-6 in NEAC playoffs on May 12.


Statistically speaking: Kittle is fourth among NEAC hitters with a .438 batting average, Riley is third in the conference with four home runs, Bair is fifth in the NEAC with 22 strikeouts and Nelson is fifth with a 2.75 earned run average.

Softball
Scheduled games on Tuesday and Saturday were postponed due to the weather and, on Sunday, the Wildcats lost at Penn State Berks by scores of 8-0 and 6-1 to go to 8-10 overall and 2-2 in the conference. In the opener, Penn College was held to two singles and its batters struck out 14 times. In the second game, the Wildcats had eight hits but were limited to just a seventh-inning run.


Last Monday, it was announced that sophomore Morgan Heritage, of New Castle, Delaware, was named the NEAC Pitcher of the week after an impressive showing in an 8-1 win against conference opponent Morrisville State College the week before. Heritage tossed a complete game, allowing one run, six hits and two walks. She also struck out 12 batters to earn her third win of the year.

Statistically speaking: Hermitage is tied for third in the NEAC with four wins and is fourth in strikeouts with 45. Alyssa Gentile, of Fairport, New York, is eighth in the conference with a .400 batting average and Taylor Krow, of Mechanicsburg, is ninth with a .397 batting average.

Men's Tennis


Opening NEAC play on Thursday, the Wildcats blanked St. Elizabeth, 9-0. Winning in both their singles and doubles matches for Penn College were Luke Whitenight, of Berwick, at No. 1 singles and doubles; Blake Whitmire, of Shickshinny, at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles; Garrett Benner, of Selinsgrove, at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles; Nicholas Pascual, of Doylestown, at No. 4 singles and No. 3 doubles; Will DeMarco, of Glen Mills, at No. 5 singles and No. 2 doubles; and Joe Morrin, of Morrisville, at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.


Hosting Misericordia University on Sunday, Penn College won, 8-1, to improve to 4-5 overall. Winning both their singles and doubles matches were Benner at No. 2 singles and doubles; Pascual at No. 3 singles and No. 1 doubles; DeMarco at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles; Ethan Rosler, of Bloomsburg, at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles; and Stephen Helminiak, of Williamsport, at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

Women's Tennis
In its spring and NEAC season opener on Thursday, Penn College topped St. Elizabeth, 6-3, for its first win after an 0-7 fall. Winning in both their singles and doubles matches for the Wildcats were Amber Janelli, of Denver, at No. 4 singles and No. 2 doubles; Emily Bell, of Jersey Shore, at No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles; and Hanna Williams, of Marion, New York, at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.


On Sunday at Misericordia University, Penn College lost, 9-0, to drop to 1-8 overall.

Men's Golf
After an early-week postponement due to bad weather conditions, the Wildcats opened their spring season on Thursday in the Elizabethtown Blue Jay Classic at Hershey Country Club East where they ended 12th in a 20-team field with a 349. Dickinson took team honors with a 322. Freshman Brian Whelan, of Cresco, led Penn College with an 84, tied for 27th among 103 individuals. Alvernia’s Keith Noonan took medalist honors with a 75.
