Penn College Athletes Have Record Year

From the golf team's third straight unbeaten season to the archery team producing its 30th All-American, Pennsylvania College of Technology athletic teams have completed a record-setting year.

Competing in the Penn State University Athletic Conference for the first time, Wildcat teams won five championships and finished second in two other sports.

"It was, obviously, a tremendous year for Penn College athletics in that we had seven championships five in the PSUAC we had a Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association championship men's bowling team and an Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference championship men's volleyball team," said Mike Stanzione, college athletic director. "That is, in one academic year, the most championships we've ever won."

"It is a testament to the quality of athletes that we get here at Penn College and also to the excellence in coaching that they receive. When you combine those two things, good things happen, and this is a prime example of that," he added.

GolfA 20-0 season record, which included winning the championship in the Penn State University Athletic Conference as a first-year member, pushed the golf team's three-year unbeaten string to 100-0 under coach Chet Schuman, in his sixth year. In addition, Shaun McQuay (sophomore/Watsontown) edged teammate Matt Haile (senior/Sunbury) on the first playoff hole to win individual PSUAC honors.

BaseballAfter a 13-5 fall season under second-year coach Rees Daneker, the Wildcats went 19-6 in the spring to capture their first PSUAC championship. Jordan Staib (Williamsport), Mike Daciw (Sun Valley) and twin brothers Phil and James Woodring (Waynesboro) earned all-conference honors.

Men's SoccerPenn College was coming off a season in which it won championships in all three conferences that it competed in. Under new coach Jeff Finn, the Wildcats never missed a beat, going 12-5 and winning their first PSUAC title.

Women's Soccer The Lady Wildcats, under new coach Jennifer Savani, went 2-5-1, but still qualified for the Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference finals, where they finished second.

Men's Cross CountryCompeting in the PSUAC for the first time, Penn College went 22-23 overall, 19-0 in the conference, and won the conference crown under Mike Paulhamus, in his fifth year as coach. Tom Lambert (Bangor) won the individual men's title.

Women's Cross CountryAlthough it only went 2-3 in meets, the Penn College women's team, also coached by Paulhamus, placed second in the end-of-the-season PSUAC meet.

Women's Volleyball Coming off a great season in which it won a conference championship, the Penn College women, under sixth-year coach Bambi Hawkins, went 12-10 and finished second in the PSUAC.

Fall Tennis Penn College was 3-6 under first-year coach Davis Santucci.

Men's Basketball The Wildcats went 10-16 in Gene Bruno's 10th season as coach. Tony Flint (Port Allegany) was named a PSUAC all-conference honorable mention. He ended his four-year career with 1,072 points.

Women's Basketball Penn College went 19-8 and captured the PSUAC championship under fifth-year coach Ron Kodish. Katlyn Stupar (State College) closed out her career with a school-record 998 points in two seasons. As a freshman a year ago, she scored a school single-season record 526 points in 17 games and twice during her career scored a single-game record 43 points. Stupar was named to the all-PSUAC first team, Brittany Blessard (Renovo) was named to the all-conference second team and Amy Fassett (Athens) earned all-conference honorable mention. Kodish was named the conference coach of the year.

BowlingTim McMahon (Williamsport) and Ben Zech (West York) teamed to win the Pennsylvania Collegiate Athletic Association men's doubles championship and McMahon, Zech, Brandon Hendricks (Sunbury), Steve Eckman (Williamsport), Andrew Hurst (West York) and Andrew Parsons (Islip, N.Y.) combined to win the PCAA men's team title as Lisa Worth completed her eighth season.

Women's Softball After three straight seasons during which they went .500 or worse, the Lady Wildcats rebounded with a 13-8 record and reached the PSUAC playoffs under coach Roger Harris, in his fifth season as coach. Marley Sampsell (Julian) and Ann Marie Prosser (Elizabethtown) earned all-conference honors.

Men's Volleyball Under third-year coach Wes Strayer, the Wildcats went 28-5, winning their second consecutive Eastern Pennsylvania Collegiate Conference crown and finishing second in the highly competitive Middle Atlantic Collegiate Volleyball Club League. Kyle Flook (Cedar Cliff), Cody Umberger (Lower Dauphin) and Bill Hayes (Conneaut Valley) were named to the MACVCL all-tournament team.

ArcheryMichelle Wright, a junior from Kendall, N.Y., became the college's 30th All-American archer. In addition, Wildcats Jessica Larson (freshman/Montoursville) and Mark Lambert (freshman/Venus) were named national collegiate "Rookies of the Year" during coach Chad Karstetter's sixth season as coach.
