Penn College Athletes, Fraternity Members Excel Academically

Student members of Pennsylvania College of Technology's intercollegiate athletics teams and the campus' three recognized fraternities attained collective grade-point averages higher than their peers during the Fall 2008 semester.
Penn College's student-athletes achieved an overall GPA of 2.94 for the Fall 2008 semester, considerably above the all-student average of 2.79. Team academic performance was led by women's soccer (3.20), men's soccer (3.12), and tennis and men's cross-country (3.06).
Phi Mu Delta, Sigma Nu and Chi Phi the first fraternities to be sanctioned by Penn College attained an all-Greek grade-point average of 2.853 for the semester, significantly exceeding the all-male GPA of 2.549.
"We have recently recognized and opened fraternities on Penn College's campus and have been excited about the places they may demonstrate leadership," said Erin M. Datteri, assistant director for Greek life and leadership. "I am very pleased that their first achievements include excelling in the area of academics. I look forward to continuing to work with these groups and to watching their positive impact at Penn College."
The college is in the process of hearing presentations from two sororities interested in being represented on campus: Alpha Sigma Alpha and Sigma Sigma Sigma.
"We expect a great deal from our student leaders, whether it be in the classroom or on the playing field or in the community," said Elliott Strickland, special assistant for student affairs and student development. "These students do not receive scholarships or any other special treatment for what they give back to the college and the campus community; however, they continue to work hard and excel in all that they do.
"We are profoundly proud of them in many ways, not the least of which is their academic excellence!"
