Wildcat Archers Set to Hold Big Event

While Pennsylvania College of Technology baseball, softball, men’s golf and men’s tennis teams posted victories last week, the college’s archers are getting set to host their only home event of the year — the East Region Outdoor Collegiate Championships this Saturday and Sunday — and coach Chad Karstetter has high hopes for his team.
“We have been working very hard outside, even though the weather has not cooperated and spring does not seem to be here yet,” he said early last week.
“Overall, the team looks very strong and I believe it will show at our event,” Karstetter said. “We are looking forward to having a home event this year. It’s nice to have the home-field advantage.”
About 120 archers from a dozen colleges or universities are expected to participate during competition on the athletic field next to the college’s field house. Registration will be held from 10 a.m.-noon on Saturday, with practice beginning immediately afterward. Divisions include men’s and women’s compound, recurve, bowhunter and barebow. Qualifying, with 72 arrows each, will be held during the afternoon prior to the mixed team rounds at 4 p.m.
Action continues at 8 a.m. Sunday, with practice followed by individual head-to-head elimination and medal rounds. After a break for lunch at noon, official team rounds will begin at 1 p.m.
Baseball
In nonconference action on Wednesday against King’s College, Penn College fell, 15-5, ending a seven-game win streak. Rylan Whitmyer, of Williamsport, led the Wildcats with a 2-for-2 plate performance, including a double, and drove in three runs.
Saturday at home against Keuka College, Penn College led 5-2 after one inning before falling 7-5 in the first game. In the second game, the Wildcats trailed 5-1 after four innings then rallied for eight runs in the sixth inning en route to a 10-5 win that improved their North Eastern Athletic Conference record to 5-1 and overall mark to 11-8. In the second-game win, key hits in the sixth were a two-run single by Ben Flicker, of Topton, and two-run triple by Colton Riley, of Danville. Flicker finished the game with four hits while pitcher Max Bair, of Centre Hall, went the nine-inning distance to improve to 3-1.
Sunday’s games at Penn State Altoona were postponed.
On April 9, it was announced that Bair, a senior, was named the NEAC Pitcher of the Week after going seven innings in a 15-0 win against Wells College the previous day, allowing two hits and striking out eight.
In North Eastern Athletic Conference action this week: At Lancaster Bible College (10-9 overall, 0-3 NEAC through Sunday), 1 p.m. Saturday; at Gallaudet University (3-21 overall, 0-4 NEAC through Sunday), noon Sunday.

At Susquehanna University in nonconference play on Wednesday, Penn College fell by scores of 8-0 in five innings and 6-1, extending its losing streak to four games. In the opener, the Wildcats managed just one hit, a double by Morgan Heritage, of New Castle, Delaware. In the second game, Penn College had nine hits, but left eight runners on base.
On Friday at Keuka College in NEAC action, Penn College lost by identical 9-2 scores as Keuka got complete-game pitching from its two starters.
Right back in conference play at home on Saturday, the Wildcats took two from SUNY Cobleskill by scores of 3-1 and 7-1 to even their NEAC record at 4-4 and go to 10-14 overall. In the opener, Penn College scored all of its runs in the second inning. Alyssa Gentile, of Fairport, New York, led the team with three hits, including a double, in three at-bats and scored a run. In the second game, Heritage fanned 13 batters and allowed only one earned run to improve her mound record to 5-5. On offense, Taylor Krow, of Mechanicsburg, went 2-for-2 at the plate and scored twice.

Also for Penn College, Eli Dyer, of Wallingford, Connecticut, shot an 83; Dan Pivirotto, of State College, shot an 86; Matt Ciccone, of Doylestown, shot an 89; and Ben Fails, of Hummelstown, shot a 90.
On Wednesday at the Keuka College Spring Invitational, the Wildcats finished fourth in a 10-team field with a score of 335. SUNY Cobleskill captured team honors with a 324. Individually for Penn College, Baumbach and Austin Moscariello, of New Columbia, each shot 82 to tie for eighth while Brian Whelan, of Cresco, shot 84 to tie for 13th; Fails shot 87 to tie for 19th; and Zach Nelsen, of Clinton Park, New York, shot 93 to tie for 39thin a 56-player field. Patrick Coughlin, of Utica College, was the medalist with a 75.
In a recent schedule addition, Penn College had a two-day dual match with Susquehanna University, winning on Friday at Selinsgrove Country Club, 323-350, and 316-349 on Saturday at Williamsport Country Club. On Friday, Pivirotto medaled with a 79. On Saturday, Baumbach medaled with a 74.
