Steven V. Nickell has been named director of the Shale Training & Education Center at Pennsylvania College of Technology.
ShaleTEC, a collaboration between Penn College and Penn State Extension, serves as a central resource for the workforce-development and education needs of the community and the oil and natural gas industry.
Nickell comes to Penn College from Butler County Community College, where he was director of business and industry safety training. In that position, he solicited, created and provided training programs to a variety of businesses and industries.
Previous to that, he worked for Troyer Farms Potato Products, Waterford, as district sales manager; for Lance Inc., Charlotte, N.C., where he was in direct sales and distribution; and for Second National Bank, Warren,Ohio, where he was lead processor.
Nickell holds a Bachelor of Science in public safety management from Franklin University, Columbus, Ohio, and an associate degree in fire science from Pikes Peak Community College, Pikes Peak, Colo. He is pursuing a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Colorado State University.
Nickell served in the U.S. Marine Corps as a lance corporal from 1984-88, and he holds a number of certifications related to firefighting, hazardous materials and emergency medical technician.

Brundage, assistant vice president for workforce and economic development. “His experience with running a successful business and industry training center – that offers hands-on training in the areas of health, safety and environment for workers in a variety of industries, including natural gas and manufacturing – lends itself to the mission of Penn College.
“The skills Steve developed serving his community as a volunteer firefighter and instructor for the Pennsylvania Fire Academy are beneficial to ShaleTEC's more recent initiative to train the emergency-responder community as an educational training agency of the Fire Academy.”
ShaleTEC’s central operations are in the Center for Business & Workforce Development on Penn College’s main campus. Training is also offered at Penn State Extension offices, Penn College’s North Campus in Wellsboro, the college’s Energy Technology Education Center near Allenwood and various Penn State campus locations.
