Penn College Announces Hiring of Head Cross-Country, Women’s Volleyball Coaches

The Pennsylvania College of Technology Athletics Department has named David J. Mendez as head cross-country coach and Monica L. Brown as head coach of women’s volleyball.

“Both Coach Mendez and Coach Brown are taking over two very strong programs,” said Scott E. Kennell, director of athletics.  “I am very confident that, with their experiences and past successes, they will continue that tradition.”



David J. MendezMendez comes to Penn College after serving as the head coach of Our Lady of Mercy Academy track team in Newfield, N.J.  While there, he coached two New Jersey state champions, won the Penn Relays and was named Coach of the Year.  Coach Mendez is no stranger to success, having coached 20 individual state champions, six team state champions and four Olympians over the years. He is a graduate of Southern Illinois and Monmouth universities.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to lead such a strong team,” Mendez said.  “It has been the top team in the conference for years and I am eager to keep that going.”

Monica L. BrownBrown comes to Penn College after a stellar collegiate career.  As a freshman and sophomore, she was a member of the Iowa Western Community College women’s volleyball team that placed in the top six at the NJCAA championships both years.  After transferring to Lock Haven University, she became the starting defensive specialist and helped the team to berths into the NCAA regional tournament and a second-place finish in the PSAC conference championships.  After graduating with a degree in sports administration, she stayed on as a volunteer coach for the team.

“I’m very excited to be the new head coach of Penn College,” Brown said.  “The program has had so much success over the years and I look forward to continuing it.”

Both coaches will assume their new positions immediately.
