Open House 2000 Activities Abound at Penn College

The new main campus entrance, including a Commemorative Walkway, a student-constructed Field House and an expanded and renovated Earth Science Center are among new features that alumni, future students and their families, and community visitors will behold during Open House 2000 at Pennsylvania College of Technology on Sunday, March 26.

From noon to 4:30 p.m., Open House participants can choose from an array of activities taking place on the main campus and at the Advanced Automotive Technology Center on Wahoo Drive, the Aviation Center at the Williamsport Regional Airport in Montoursville and the Earth Science Center near Allenwood.

An Open House at the College's North Campus near Wellsboro will take place on Saturday, April 8.

Shuttle buses will be available from the main campus to transport visitors to the other campuses. The buses will leave the main campus on the hour and the other sites on the half hour to return to the main campus.

Student Ambassadors will lead walking tours of the main campus. The tours will depart from the George S. Klump Academic Center at noon, 1 and 2 p.m. and from the Alvin C. Bush Campus Center at 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 p.m.

Admissions/general information sessions will be held at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m. at the Academic Center auditorium for those interested in enrolling at Penn College this fall. For those interested in enrolling in 2001 or later, sessions will be offered at 11:30 a.m., and 12:30 and 1:30 p.m. at Penn?s Inn in the Campus Center. Students interested in a major in the School of Natural Resources Management can attend sessions at 1 and 2 p.m. at the Earth Science Center.

Future students can get help in selecting a major, choosing a career, getting the most out of college and learning about cooperative education in Counseling and Career Services workshops running throughout the day at the Campus Center. Students concerned about placement tests can visit the Advisement Center in Room 154 of the Learning Resources Center.

Tours of on-campus housing at The Village at Penn College and the Campus View Apartments will be available, and off-campus-housing landlords will be on hand at the Field House to discuss available housing in the community.

Some Open House highlights include a balloon launch from 1 to 1:30 p.m on the campus mall; cooking demonstrations by You?re the Chef hosts Paul Mach and Tom Speicher at 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 p.m. in Room B132 of the Lifelong Education Center;

demonstrations by the reigning national champion Penn College Wildcat archery team at the Field House at 1 and 2 p.m.; and the Third Annual Pro-Am Keyboarding Tournament open to guest contestants at the Robert L. Breuder Advanced Technology and Health Sciences Center.

For alumni, an informal reception, hosted by Penn College President Dr. Davie Jane Gilmour, will be held at 3 p.m. in the College Library. The president also will meet alumni at the Earth Science Center at 12:30 p.m.

Alumni who register at the John F. Thompson Professional Development Center will receive a discount coupon for purchases at the College Store. Alumni tours will leave the Professional Development Center at noon, 1 and 2 p.m. Staff will assist alumni and others in finding bricks they purchased for the Commemorative Walkway at the new main entrance on Maynard Street.

The Communication Arts Department will have old student newspapers on display in the Advanced Technology and Health Sciences Center, Room W135. The Earth Science Center will welcome alumni throughout the day in the student lounge.

In addition to the highlights mentioned before, visitors can see powerlifting and karate demonstrations from 1 to 2 p.m. and 2 to 3 p.m. respectively in the Fitness Center on the second floor of the Campus Center.

An exhibition of entries in the "Ninth Annual Paper Bridge Competition" will be on display at the 202 Gallery in the Campus Center. Visitors may cast votes for their favorites.

Demonstrations on how to create Web pages will be offered every 45 minutes in Room E207 of the Advanced Technology and Health Sciences Center. Blood-pressure and height/weight screenings will be offered by physician assistant and nursing students.

At the Earth Science Center, a Heavy Construction Equipment Rodeo will pit Penn College vs. vocational students from throughout the Northeast. A Woodsman Team will practice crosscut-sawing, ax-throwing, chopping and log-rolling, among other skills.

At the Advanced Automotive Technology Center in the Logue Industrial Park on Wahoo Drive, a Super Stock/GT Drag Car that is being designed and built by students and faculty for future competition will be on display throughout the day.

At the Aviation Center, there will be demonstrations of sheet-metal fabrication and aircraft coverings.

A special Open House buffet will be available in the Susquehanna Room dining facility from noon to 4 p.m. Le Jeune Chef Restaurant will serve an a la carte brunch from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The College radio station, WPTC, will conduct live remote broadcasts that can be heard at 88.1 FM, and will award free CDs and posters.
