The practical nursing program at Pennsylvania College of Technology's North Campus near Wellsboro has been granted full-approval status by the state Board of Nursing.

The status is given to programs that comply fully with all state regulations and policies and maintain acceptable standards. The board granted the designation following a site visit by nursing-education advisers.

The board also granted permission to add a class of nursing students from the Potter County region this fall. Charles Cole Memorial Hospital and Sweden Valley Manor in Coudersport both were visited by state Board of Nursing officials and have been approved as clinical sites.

In a cooperative effort to help meet the educational and employment needs of the community, the Potter County Education Council is assisting by recruiting students and will provide classroom space and student assistance for the program. To apply, students must have a high school diploma or GED, satisfactory performance on a pre-entrance aptitude exam, evidence of good mental and physical health, two letters of reference, a satisfactory criminal-background check, and an interview with the program coordinator.

Graduates of the certificate program meet the educational requirements necessary to take the Practical Nursing National Council Licensure Exam for full licensure as a licensed practical nurse.

Financial aid is available for eligible students through agencies such as CareerLink and Trehab and federal Pell Grant programs.

Students should file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid form through Penn College's Financial Aid Office. In addition, student loans from various agencies may be available.
