Latest College Book Relives 100 Years of ‘Marketing With a Mission’

The third volume in Pennsylvania College of Technology’s Countdown to the Centennial series, an abundantly illustrated book that employs a variety of promotional images to chronicle the transformation from Williamsport Technical Institute into Pennsylvania’s premier technical college, has been published.

Like other titles in the series, “Marketing With a Mission” was written by Elaine J. Lambert, director of college information and community relations, who drew upon her decades of experience and pulled from a rich archival reservoir to take readers on a memory-laden trip from WTI to Williamsport Area Community College to Penn College.

“I have been involved in promoting the college for more than 30 years,” said Lambert, a 1979 WACC graduate and a 2007 recipient of the college’s Distinguished Alumni Award. “Still, in writing this book, I found a few surprises and many forgotten successes in recounting a century’s worth of stories about the institution’s unique mission and dramatic marketing challenges.”

National magazine articles, college publications and marketing campaigns, merchandising, newspaper clippings and a wealth of other materials are reproduced throughout the book’s 140 colorful pages, all depicting the institution’s steadfast focus on preparing students for meaningful employment and community service.

“As a journalist turned ‘PR’ professional, I appreciate the opinions of those who believe higher education is more than a product to sell in a competitive marketplace,” Lambert said. “I believe the history of marketing at this institution, as told in the pages of ‘Marketing With a Mission,’ clearly shows that mission has always been – and should always remain – at the heart of each marketing message.

“The book is dedicated to all the employees who have worked at the institution over its 100-year history. I hope each one who reads it will discover new points of pride to inspire his or her continuing support for the Penn College mission.”

Research support for the publication was provided by Helen L. Yoas and Patricia A. Scott, both from the college’s Madigan Library; designers were Sarah K. Patterson (print) and Phillip C. Warner (web), both from College Information and Community Relations.

The book is the latest to celebrate the 2014 Centennial, marking the 100th anniversary of the first year that adult classes were held in Klump Academic Center (then Williamsport High School). A variety of commemorative activities, many of them open to the public, are scheduled throughout next year.

“Marketing With a Mission” can be purchased for $9.95 at The College Store, on the first floor of the Bush Campus Center, or online. Available at the same price are the first two Centennial books: “Were You There? The Evolution of a College Campus,” a photo-rich volume based on a 2009 retrospective exhibit in The Gallery at Penn College; and “Legacy of Leaders,” which profiles the seven individuals who guided the institution through its history.

Net proceeds from the sale of the books go toward annual student awards from the Penn College Endowed Alumni Scholarship fund.

A collection of video and audio interviews with former and current campus leaders, as well as other information including memories shared by alumni of the three institutions, are available for viewing at the Centennial website.
