Lanterns (and THON Donations) Rise on 'Perfect' Fall Evening

Penn College Benefiting THON, the local arm of the largest student-run philanthropy in the world, raised more than $200 Tuesday night – as well as awareness of the fight against childhood cancer. The turnout for the group's Sky Lantern Release was about double that of last year, when wind and brisk November temperatures posed less-than-ideal conditions. "We were so excited to see so many people come out and support THON!" said Kelsey J. Maneval, vice president of the student organization. "It was much warmer this year, which we believe was a huge benefit. Because it was so cold last year, we actually planned to have it earlier – and I think we got blessed with one of the most perfect and beautiful fall nights." The fundraising effort culminates in THON Weekend (Feb. 19-21), a 46-hour dance marathon in Penn State's Bryce Jordan Center. Since 1977, THON has raised more than $127 million for the Four Diamonds Fund at Penn State Hershey Children's Hospital.
