The Penn College Shotokan Karate Club participated in its first of three training camps and tournaments Saturday. As part of the East Coast Collegiate Karate Union, Eric M. Russell, Carlos A. Ramos-Sonera, Alton J. "A.J." Hinson and John B. Preine underwent a grueling three-session training regimen at Temple University. To their credit, they saved enough energy for success at the tournament phase of camp on Sunday. The team of Russell, Ramos and Hinson managed a third place in team kata (forms). Russell also placed third in kumite (sparring). Ramos and Hinson placed second in kata and kumite, respectively. The club will hold belt promotions at the end of the semester, and will be busy preparing for the next ECCKU camp hosted by Penn College in February.
