Members of the Penn College Shotokan Karate Club participated in the East Coast Collegiate Karate Union camp and tournament this past weekend in the campus Field House. Penn College was represented by Eric M. Russell, Carlos A. Ramos-Sonera, Hunter D. Gibson, Alton J. “A.J.” Hinson, Jack E. Bish II, John B. Preine and Hanji A. “Austin” Bae. The camp comprised an all-day training session on Saturday and a Sunday tournament run by eight instructors representing schools from Rhode Island to Virginia. The host contingent fared very well at tournament time. Five members placed in their respective rank divisions: Russell claimed second place in kumite (sparring) and a third place in kata (forms); Ramos-Sonera took first place in kata; Gibson and Hinson grabbed third place in kumite; and Bish placed second in kata. In addition, the team of Russell, Ramos-Sonera and Bish took second place in team kata. Club members continue to train for the third and final camp/tournament, to be held at West Chester University in March.
