Inaugural exhibit showcases students’ sustainable design work

An inaugural exhibition displaying the architectural design work of 18 seniors in the building science and sustainable design majors at Pennsylvania College of Technology will open soon in The Gallery at Penn College.

A public reception for “Sustainable Design 2019” will be held Thursday, May 16, from 3:30 to 6 p.m., with a gallery talk at 4:30 p.m. The design work will be on display May 16-23 in the gallery on the third floor of the Madigan Library.

Each senior was tasked with the design and development of a significant building in an urban setting. Students will present design process drawings, 3D models and computer renderings depicting their individual design solutions.

Students displaying their senior capstone design work are: Everett B. Appleby, Wilkes-Barre; Jack C. Arthur, Brookeville, Maryland; Elliot R. Brau, Coatesville; Jacob A. Confer, Spring Milles; Cayla L. Erisman, Johnstown; John D. Fitzpatrick, Clarks Summit; Noah D. Haring, Hanover; Dale R. Harvey, Douglassville; Tyler S. Kinkaid, Marietta; Eric C. Kolakowski, Palmyra; Kristine M. Luther, Duncansville; Yvette B. Moore, Red Lion; William A. Morrow, Newville; Thomas H. Plank, East Stroudsburg; Taylor D. Porter, Muncy; Kyle N. Rhoads, Newville; Ethan I. Smeigh, New Bloomfield; and Rachel E. White, Quakertown.

According to Geoffrey M. Campbell, assistant professor of architectural technology, Appleby was instrumental in making the show happen, promoting the idea with administrators and classmates, arranging meetings and handling other logistics in support of the endeavor.

“It has been a privilege and an honor to work with Penny (Griffin Lutz, gallery director) and Mr. Campbell on a project that really is designed to bring out the best of what our program has to offer,” Appleby said. “I’m excited for the future, and I can only hope that this becomes a Penn College tradition.”

Campbell added: “We are very excited to have this opportunity to showcase the students’ work in The Gallery at Penn College. This final design studio is the culmination of four years of effort. The students draw from everything they’ve learned relating to architectural history, design, graphics, building materials, structures, environmental systems, working drawings, building information modeling and sustainability.”

“Sustainable Design 2019” will follow the gallery’s summer exhibit hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays; 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Fridays; and 1 to 4 p.m. Sundays. (The gallery is closed Saturdays and Mondays.)
