Horticulture Alumnus Attains Certification From State Association

A Spring 2008 landscape/nursery technology graduate of Pennsylvania College of Technology has earned state certification as a horticulturist.

Christopher M. Bramble, of Kittanning, who re-enrolled toward a bachelor’s degree in technology management after receiving an associate degree in May, joins a number of other Penn College alumni and faculty in attaining Pennsylvania Certified Horticulturist designation.

“It’s great to see another graduate achieve this credential,” said Carl J. Bower, a member of the horticulture faculty in the college’s School of Natural Resources Management who also holds the Pennsylvania Landscape & Nursery Association authentication. “This level of certification helps separate Chris from many others without it. Not only does it add to Chris’ professionalism, it also adds to the level of professionalism in the industry itself.”

Penn College’s landscape/nursery technology major offered at the Schneebeli Earth Science Center near Allenwood was revised in 2007 to ornamental horticulture with distinct emphases in landscape technology, plant production and horticulture retail management.

The PCH program is a formal way for landscape/nursery professionals to competitively test their knowledge and gain credibility in the field. In order to obtain certification, a level of 80 percent must be achieved in each of four subject areas: plants and their growth, plant maintenance, landscape design and installation, and basic garden-center operations.

PLNA is the leading trade association representing the commonwealth’s $5.6 billion green industry. Founded in 1904, its 750 members include production nurseries, garden centers, landscape designers, landscape-maintenance firms, arborists, interiorscape firms, florists and other private-sector companies in the Northeast’s leading horticultural state.
