Pennsylvania College of Technology's School of Health Sciences and Susquehanna Health System will offer the fourth annual Health Careers Camp on June 16-18 for students entering grades 9-12.

The event, which is being hosted by Penn College, includes workshops for the Dental Hygiene, Health Information Technology, Nursing, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Paramedic Technology, Physical Fitness Specialist, Physician Assistant and Radiography academic majors.

Students will participate in hands-on experiences such as taking blood pressures and making an occupied bed (Nursing), developing X-rays (Radiography), and learning airway management and electrical therapy (Paramedic Technology), among others. By participating in the workshops, students will be able to determine the major that?s best suited for their career objectives. The program exposes students to jobs they didn't know were available and lets them know they can stay in the area to pursue a degree in these health-career fields.

Susquehanna Health System became involved with the program in hopes of hiring qualified graduates. There is a high demand statewide for graduates in many health-care fields. Students interested in health-care occupations may contact SHS to learn more about job-shadowing and "VolunTEEN" options, as well.

Students may stay at Penn College during the program, which features a camp format. Project Director Shawn A. Kiser, coordinator of dental hygiene at the College, said it's a good opportunity for students to sample college life.

The participants also will be able to speak with Penn College students, and staff will arrange various types of entertainment for the times when workshops are not in session.

The student guests will stay in their own section of the College, which will be staffed by summer-conference assistants and adult chaperones. The students will be provided with three meals each day.

With 20 of 40 spots already spoken for, it's important to respond soon. The registration fee is $40.
